Column Name: SURF_IMP_TOT_REL
Description: The total amount of the toxic chemical disposed of in surface impoundments at the facility during the calendar year (January 1 through December 31). This amount represents the Surface Impoundment releases as reported in part II, section 5.5.3 of the Form R for reporting years 1987 through 2002. In reporting year 2003, the reporting of Surface Impoundment was divided into two sub categories, RCRA Subtitle C Surface Impoundments and Other (non RCRA Subtitle C) Surface impoundments. These two sub categories can be found, respectively, in part II, sections 5.5.3A and 5.5.3B of the form R. In reporting years 2003 and after, these two sub categories are added together to obtain the total amount of the toxic chemical disposed of in surface impoundments.
For Dioxin and Dioxin like Compounds, this amount is represented in grams. For all other chemicals, this amount is represented in pounds.
Surface impoundments include natural topographic depressions, man-made excavations and diked areas that primarily are made of earthen materials and which hold liquid wastes. These uncovered areas are commonly used to volatilize and/or settle materials. Release amounts may be reported as specific numbers or as ranges. Letter codes are used to represent ranges: A = 1-10 pounds, B = 11-499 pounds, and C = 500-999 pounds. If a facility uses a range code, the amount reported to TRI is the midpoint of the range. Null values will appear as zero amounts.
