Under the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 (PPA), TRI collects information to track industry progress in reducing waste generation and moving towards safer waste management alternatives. Measures that facilities have taken to prevent pollution and reduce the amount of toxic chemicals entering the environment are shown in the table below. Although factors other than these reported practices contribute to year-to-year changes in releases, results are sorted by largest reduction in order to facilitate identification of pollution prevention successes. 2013 77,199.00 77,176.00 -.03% Source Reduction: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping - Six mechanical seals on the polykettles (reactors) were upgraded to reduce fugitive emissions from equipment leaks.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01 : INTERNAL POLLUTION PREVENTION OPPORTUNITY AUDIT(S) - An opportunity to reduce fugitive equipment leak emissions from the polykettles was identified by the maintenance department and engineering group.

Source Reduction: The design of the mechanical seals on the top of six polykettles was upgraded to a design specific for agitator service. The conventional design was originally a pump seal adapted to agitator service. The upgraded configuration is designed to tolerate shaft movement, and this has increased the reliability of the new seal This has resulted in the reduction of vinyl acetate fugitive emissions.

DANVILLE,
VA 24540
2012 1,407.40 1,457.10 3.53% Other Environmental Practices: In the past, DanChem Technologies (DTI) has relied on underground piping as a means to get process wastewater from various locations throughout the chemical manufacturing areas to the site's effluent basin. The basin was a lined surface impoundment designed to collect high pH wastewater from areas of the site and mix with low pH wastewater from other areas of the site in an attempt to neutralize prior to discharge to the City of Danville Wastewater Treatment Facility. Operation of the system was regulated under an Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permit which required continuous monitoring for pH and periodic monitoring for concentrations of chemical contamination. Although there were no regulatory mandates which forced the elimination of the effluent basin, in August 2011, DTI voluntarily began the construction of a new wastewater treatment facility to completely eliminate the effluent basin and start utilizing the latest technologies in wastewater treatment and pollution prevention. In August 2012, one year following the start of the project, all wastewater from across the site was being pumped through an above ground piping system and was being accumulated in a series of storage tanks within the secondary containment of the new wastewater tank farm. By the end of 2012, the new wastewater treatment facility went operational and began treating the sites discharge. DTI is currently exploring opportunities to reuse the discharge from the wastewater treatment facility.
