Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2023 Source Reduction:: S23: Implemented new technology, technique, or process
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Source Reduction - BD Medical completed installation of Advanced Air Technology Dry Bed System January 2023.
2022 Source Reduction:: S23: Implemented new technology, technique, or process
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
S23: Improved stack testing methods was used to calculate an increased destruction removal efficiency (DRE). BD Medical completed the installation of the new Advanced Air Technology Dry Bed System in January 2023 and will provide capture and control for EtO fugitive emissions.

2021 Source Reduction:: S34: Improved monitoring practices of potential spill or leak sources[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
S34: Implemented a more robust leak detection and repair program (LDAR).

Source Reduction: Source Reduction - Updated the method to quantify the amount of EO returned to the supplier for reuse.Estimated 1% decrease in EO usage with improved sterilization cycles. BD Medical is in the process of installing an Advanced Air Technology Dry Bed System that will provide capture and control for EtO fugitive emissions. This system is expected to come online at the end of the year 2022.

2013 Other Environmental Practices - After use, ethylene oxide is destroyed using a catalytic abatement system. The catalyst in this unit was replaced mid-year in 2012, resulting in a significant decrease in ethylene oxide emissions. The catalyst will be replaced every five years to avoid reduced efficiency in the destruction of ethylene oxide.
2012 Other Environmental Practices - The catalytic oxidation unit catalyst was replaced during the reporting year, restoring the efficiency of the catalytic destruction of Ethylene Oxide.
2011 Source Reduction - The increase in emssions is due to reduced efficiency of the catalytic oxidation unit catalyst. The catalyst is being replaced during CY 2012, to restore the efficiency of the catalytic oxidation unit.
2007 Source Reduction - This is a new sterilization process. The waste ethylene oxide is destroyed by catalytic oxidation.
