Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2023 Source Reduction:: S24: Modified or updated equipment or layout
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
S24: A new, more modern, more efficient reactor was built to produce kymene products.

2018 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - As a Responsible Care Facility, PSM/RMP and ISO certified facility, it is important to continue to review all processes for improvement. With Epichlorohydrin, the facility uses critical equipment preventative maintenance to ensure the system is running at optimum effectiveness as well as addressing minor concerns quickly.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Epichlorphydrin polymers are a staple in paper processing with no known alternatives providing any comparable characteristics.

2017 Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W19: Membrane unit for existing material manufactured off site. Reduces the use of Epicholohydrin because the product is manufactured off site.

Source Reduction - Opportunity from customer
2016 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Epichlorohydrin is essential to the preparation of the final product produced. It will generally follow the production flow.

2015 Source Reduction:: W36: Implemented inspection or monitoring program of potential spill or leak sources[-25-49%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Source Reduction - An LDAR program was implemented in 2015. No leaks were detected on the meter. A fugitive rate of 10 ppm was recommended by the specialist. This led to lower reported level of fugitive emissions.
2012 Source Reduction - Product formulation changes made because of customer demand for higher solids in the finished product to reduct shipping costs. The higher solids results in a lower residual of free epichlorohydrin remaining in the product.
2011 Source Reduction:: W81: Changed product specifications
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Barriers to P2 - Customer demand is for higher solids in the finished product to reduce shipping costs. A higher solids product results in a lower residual of free epichlorohydrin remaining in the product.
