Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

2022 |
Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency[-5-14%]
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
|
S21: Ongoing improvements to our copper process will effect the efficiency and containment of this substance, as it is an impurity in the copper metal. |
2018 |
Source Reduction:: W41: Increased purity or raw materials[-0-4%]
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas |
W41: We attempt to procure the cleanest scrap copper as possible. However, this can be cost prohibitive in times of great demand. Source Reduction - We rely on our vendors to supply the cleanest scrap. Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Lead is an impurity contained in the scrap that we purchase and melt. We have agreements in place with our vendors as to the type of copper that is acceptable. However, testing the inbound material before it is melted is sometime insufficient, as the copper scrap is not homogeneous and it is sometimes difficult to catch high impurities. |

Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
|
W13: Preventive Maintenance Activities to reduce equipment leaks and transmission of fugitive dusts. |
2015 |
Source Reduction:: W36: Implemented inspection or monitoring program of potential spill or leak sources
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
|
Source Reduction - Employees look for opportunities for improvement of equipment. Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Employees and committees look for ways to minimize leaks and spills. |
2014 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Lead occurs as an impurity in SCM Metals Products raw material. Based on testing and generator knowledge, the level of production is the best indicator of the amount of lead released. SCM Metals purchases the purest reasonable raw materials to process, therefore there is little room for source reduction of this release. |

2013 |
Source Reduction:: W41: Increased purity or raw materials
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
|
Source Reduction - Our Tin Operations ceased at the end of 2013, we are currently supplied by an outside vendor who processes the Tin for us. Due to this change, we no longer have the lead impurities in Tin Dross and Dust Collector Dust from the Tin Operations. |
2012 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Not economically feasible, would require purchasing cathode grade copper. |
