Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2023 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Copper is a very high thermal conductivity material. The next best is aluminum and it is less than half as conductive. Therefore, it is not a good substitute.

2022 Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - The next reasonable, alternate material would be aluminum which has a thermal conductivity half that of copper.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Recycled metals are a source of revenue for this company so every effort is made to recycle metals rather than lose them to the environment.

2021
Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Recycled metals are a source of revenue for this company so every effort is made to recycle metals rather than lose them to the environment.

2020 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Copper provides the highest thermal conductivity at a reasonable price (diamond has a higher thermal conductivity but the price is exorbitant, for example).

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Recycled metals from manufacturing are a source of revenue for this company so every effort is made to recycle metals rather than lose them to the environment.

2019 Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Copper is expensive so we always try to minimize the amount of copper used and the amount of scrap copper produced via machining or other processes.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Aavid Thermacore maintains a "No Exposure" Storm Water permit for this site. That means that we maintain our materials under roof and out of the rain so that the storm water run off is as clean as possible.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Performance of our products would be seriously reduced if copper was not used to make the products.

2018
Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - All possible metal scrap is accumulated for recycling. This includes not just copper but also aluminum, stainless steel, plain steel, etc.

2017 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Heat pipes and vapor chambers (produced by Aavid Thermacore) use water as the working fluid for greatest performance. Water is not compatible with any thermally conductive materials other than copper.

2016 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - High purity copper is a necessary component for much of what we produce for material compatibility reasons.

2015 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Thermacore recycles all waste metals possible including copper. The amount recycled is dependent on product mix/design as well as annual sales.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Thermacore's products require high purity copper in order to work. This is the standard in the industry and, while alternatives are being sought, they have not yet been found.

2014 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Copper is required to manufacture Thermacore's primary product.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - All copper scrap is retained for recycling. This is good for the environment as well as a way for Thermacore to recoup money from our scrap material.

2013 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The use of copper is driven by our customer's demands and is not at our discretion. Aluminum is used whenever possible as an alternative since it is cheaper.

2012 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W42: Residual parts from programs are utilized for prototyping of new programs and for low volume production programs.

Source Reduction - Employees have the ability to search inventory for existing copper tubing close to their requirement.
