Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Sandia National Laboratories Environmental Management System (EMS) is a continuing cycle of planning, implementing, evaluating, and improving processes to achieve environmental goals. Sandia EMS provides an integrated approach for management and members of the workforce to identify and manage environmental risks, and is conducted in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2015 Standard for EMS. ISO 14001:2015 is the internationally accepted standard used to recognize and validate the effectiveness of EMS at Sandia. It specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining environmental aspects and their impacts, developing environmental objectives and targets and the implementation of programs to meet these objectives and targets. The scope of Sandias EMS encompasses all activities, products, and services that have the potential to interact with the environment at all of Sandias numerous locations. All individuals working at Sandia at all sites are subject to this requirement, including employees, contractors, consultants, students, and visitors. Sandia has and maintains a multi-site ISO 14001:2015 Certification for Sandias New Mexico and California locations. These two sites are subject to an annual third party audit in order to maintain this certification. Source Reduction: Source Reduction - Pollution Prevention (P2) includes any practice, which reduces or eliminates the quantity of hazardous substances, contaminants, or pollutants released into the environment. It is the basis of a sound environmental management program, and is a central element in the overall ES&H program and day-to-day laboratory operations at Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM). The SNL/NM P2 Program is structured to offer technical support to SNL/NM line organizations through ES&H environmental support teams that assist in the identification and implementation of cost effective projects. At SNL/NM, the P2 practices have reduced pollution, reduced waste generation, conserved natural resources, and saved money. National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC and the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) are committed to incorporatingpollution-prevention practices in all aspects of SNL/NM operations based on defined performance measures. The performance measures address waste generation, waste diversion by recycling, green purchasing, and conservation of water and energyresources. These performance measures correspond to the DOE complex wide pollution prevention and energy efficiency goals. SNL/NM personnel perform evaluations to track the progress towards these performance measures, using quantitative data and status reports. |
