Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2018 Source Reduction:: W33: Installed overflow alarms or automatic shutoff valves
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W33: Overflow switch installed to shut off feed pump when level in rundown tank got too high. This would minimize solution leaving the system.

Source Reduction - Maintenance and production management actively worked together to minimize solution leaving the system. This would improve environmental and economical aspects.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Any cleanings, equipment washing, or spills/leaks were collected and added back into the system. Purity was not quite affected in this process. Any solution leaving the system was washed down before collecting.

2017 Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas
Source Reduction - Environmental manager, production manager, and plant manager were actively engaged in the recovery of metals for both economic and environmental side of the process.

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Used pollution prevention techniques for Ni and Co compounds from RY2015 and used inventory control that was introduced in RY2017 for placing washes or remaining solutions into inventory for later use in similar batches. Further pollution prevention would most likely mean to pull metals out via solvent extraction for later use or a full scale wastewater treatment plant for the site, which would be extremely costly for the company.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Recycling, for Blue Line, involves taking the metal solutions produced that are remaining in lines or during sampling and adding them back to other batches of similar primary metals. Tank rinses and PPE cleaning water are recycled as well through batch addition.

2015 Source Reduction:: W63: Modified containment procedures for cleaning units
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W63: Initial tank washes were contained and stored for next batch production to improve yields and help prevent metals going into wastewater area. Personal protective equipment was also washed in container to trap and hold metals that could be used in batch production.

Source Reduction - Environmental manager, production manager, and plant manager were actively engaged in the recovery of metals for both economic and environmental side of the process.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Recycling, for Blue Line, involves taking the metal solutions produced that are remaining in lines or during sampling and adding them back to other batches of similar primary metals. Tank rinses and PPE cleaning water are recycled as well through batch addition.
