Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
Barriers: B2-Barriers to P2 B2 - Require technical information on pollution prevention techniques applicable to specific production processes. |
Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Blue Line reuses material from batches, including by-products and wash waters, into batches of lower purity. This was already implemented in previous years but no further source reductions have been added due to the increasing demand for higher purity materials. Barriers to P2: B2 - Require technical information on pollution prevention techniques applicable to specific production processes. - Blue Line, at the moment, does not have the means for source reduction in terms of technical knowledge to reduce nitrate compounds. There is also a limit on plant space for such activites. |

This was already implemented in previous years but no further source reductions have been added due to the increasing demand for higher purity materials. Barriers to P2: B2 - Require technical information on pollution prevention techniques applicable to specific production processes. - Blue Line currently only knows of two ways to reduce nitrate compounds. One is to have some sort of biological tank/pit with anaerobic bacteria and the other is to lower the temperature drastically (pseudo-freeze)to crash out nitrate salts. Blue Line, at the moment, does not have the means to do so in terms of plant space and technical knowledge. |

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Solutions left over from batch production and wash waters from tank cleanings are still being recycled. Most batches had higher yields in products, which led to less recycled material. A new system for tracking them all was implemented late 2017 so that they get used in the batches that match chemical identity and purity. Barriers to P2: B2 - Require technical information on pollution prevention techniques applicable to specific production processes. - The only way known to Blue Line, currently, on reducing NO2-NO3 as N is to have some sort of biological tank/pit with anaerobic bacertia. Blue Line, at the moment, does not have the means to do so in terms of plant space and technical knowledge. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Solutions left over from batch production and wash waters from tank cleanings are still being recycled. A new system for tracking them all was implemented late 2017 so that they get used in the batches that match chemical identity and purity. An increased amount of nitrates was recycled in 2017 compared to 2016. Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Blue Line has started to recycle material from batches, including by-products and wash waters, into batches of lower purity. Barriers to P2: B2 - Require technical information on pollution prevention techniques applicable to specific production processes. - The only way known to Blue Line, currently, on reducing NO2-NO3 as N is to have some sort of biological tank/pit. Blue Line, at the moment, does not have the means to do so in terms of space at the plant and capital. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Nitric acid has been re-used between tanks making similar products to reduce the nitrate compounds that go out into waste water. When tanks are being rinsed for cleaning, the rinse water that contains high nitrate compounds is used in another batch that contains the same compound for dilution. This is also an effort to save nitrate compounds that go to wastewater treatment and save on water usage. |

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Nitrates are produced from utilization of nitric acid during manufacturing. The amount of nitrates produced is dependent on customer orders. |
