Source Reduction:: W51: Instituted recirculation within a process

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. |
W51: When the process allows, the first pass distillation solvents from chromatography suite are used again to continue the distillation process. This reduces the need for new solvents to be added to the process. This is only done when the lab results indicate the first pass distillation will be wasted but could reused for waste flushes of the column. This can result in the reduction of 1-2 drums of solvents per batch. Source Reduction - This process change must be approved by the client before it is implemented. This change was identified during batch recordreview. Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - JM IS A CONTRACT PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING AND RESEARCH FIRM WHICH MANUFACTURES PRODUCTS ON A BATCH BASISBY CLIENT. THE CLIENTS' PROJECTS DICTATE THE CHEMICALS USED AND THE QUANTITIES. AS THESE PRODUCTS MAY BE IN FDAAPPROVAL PROCESS OR ALREADY FDA APPROVED JM HAS LITTLE OPPORTUNITY TO ENCOURAGE LESS HAZARDOUS CHEMICALSUBSTITUTIONS. WHEN POSSIBLE IN EARLY STAGES OF WORKING WITH NEW CLIENT, JM WILL OFFER TO OPTIMIZE PROCESS WHICHMAY RESULT IN LESS CHEMICALS USED OVERALL BY REDUCING NUMBER OF FILTRATIONS, WASHES, ETC. FDA APPROVAL ROUTES ANDWHERE WITHIN THE FDA PROCESS A CLIENT'S COMPOUND IS WILL DICTATE WHETHER CHEMICAL SUBSTITUTIONS MAY BE MADE |

W19: When possible methylene chloride will be saved from earlier process cleanings and used again for second cleaning. This does not result in significantly less new solvent use but it may reduce amounts by 1-2 drums per batch. Source Reduction - This process change must be approved by the client before it is implemented. This change was identified during batch record review. Other Environmental Practices - JM IS A CONTRACT PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING AND RESEARCH FIRM WHICH MANUFACTURES PRODUCTS ON A BATCH BASIS BY CLIENT. Other Environmental Practices: Energy Recovery - JM works with corporate approved vendors who seek to dispose of JM wastes through energy recovery whenever possible. |

W58: The first pass distillates from the chromatography processes may be reused in the process if the distillates are "clean" enough. The first pass distillates include a number of chemicals of which DCM is one. Source Reduction - Employees working in the chromatography suite determined the first pass distillates which had been wasted previously may be returned to the column if the materials were clean enough. This suggestion was provided to the client and the client approved of the suggestion. First pass distillates are only returned to the process if they have met a specification. |

Barriers to P2: B2 - Require technical information on pollution prevention techniques applicable to specific production processes. - Shipment of methylene chloride to Veolia for reuse by interested parties did not occur in 2015 due to the down market on used solvents. There were less parties interested in used solvents due to attractive prices on virgin materials. Additionally, the DCM coming from the chromatography process was not pure DCM and contained small amounts of THF and/or other solvents. Due to the impurity of the DCM, Veolia could not place the DCM into the reuse market. |

2014 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - JMPS batch processes and chemicals utilized determine the amount of DCM used each year. Clilent projects and the needs of the clients determine if a chemical substitution can be made. If a product has been approved by FDA or is seeking FDA approval chemical substitutions are not permitted. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Marisol (Veolia ES) recycles DCM at their facility and provides it to customers they have identified. The material is transferred on uniform hazardous waste manifests but is recycled through the waste vendor. This recycling process began in 2014 and was not in place in 2013. This is the reason for the difference in Section 8. |

Source Reduction - The operations team determines where their process allows for chemical reuse instead of using virgin solvent. Source Reduction - Where the client permits the business seeks to reuse solvents used in distillation for cleaning purposes rather than using virgin solvents. |
2012 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The site uses chemicals which are the best option to achieve the desired results. If a client allows chemical substitutions those substitutions are considered; however, the substitution may not be allowed should it affect quality, efficacy. |
