Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Lead compounds are ingredients to military munitions. Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Spent ammunition from indoor/semi-indoor firing ranges are recovered and recycled off-site. |

Source Reduction: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Possible drop in lead releases in CY2015 and future CYs due to fielding the M855A1 (5.56) Enhanced Penetrator Round (EPR). Lead will no longer form the bulk of the bullet's material. |

2012 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - No source reduction activities are available for firing ranges. |
||
2009 | Other Environmental Practices - For Cantonment Area firing ranges 1, 7, and 8, lead is removed from ammunition traps and sent out for reclamation and recycling. There are ultamately NO land releases from these ranges since lead bullets are trapped, removed, and then sent for recycling. There are air emissions from the open air ranges 7, 8, and 9, but "0 lbs" of air releases from the Indoor Firing Range 1. The Indoor Firing Range 1 operates a High Efficiency Particluate Air (HEPA) Filter System containing 6 in-line HEPA filters. Laboratory tests have shown no lead passes throught the third filter of the 6 filter bank system. Therefore, Range 1 has a 100% capture of lead and lead compound air emissions. Filters from Range 1 are changed out several times per year; annual total estimated lead on the filter media is 10 lbs. | ||
2008 | Other Environmental Practices - Lead is recovered from indoor firing ranges and recycled offsite. |
