Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical
Reporting Year | Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity | Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity | Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information* |
---|---|---|---|
2022 |
Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S21: Maintained the pH tolerance of the etcher using ammonia under a tighter control. The processes decreased their water rinse and drag-out factors to minimize releases to POTW. |
2021 |
Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S21: The ammoniacal etcher ran at improved pH control and venting settings to avoid solution sludging out and improve efficiency of the process; this in turn appears to have improved the life of the solution prior to scheduled preventative maintenance. Not as much inventory used compared to the previous reporting year. Source Reduction - Senior engineering involvement and knowledge was part of the approach/methodology implemented. |
2020 |
Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W19: Tight pH control and visual monitoring has been implemented to improve ammonia removal at the fume scrubber. Source Reduction - The site continues to work on fine-tuning its scrubbing operation with acidification of the scrubbing media for better removal of ammonia from air releases. A target pH is in place and regular operational monitoring is now part of the day-to-date activities. |
2019 |
Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Source Reduction - Based on production activities, the process is scheduled for chemical cleaning to ensure removal of build-up, and to increase process efficiency at our etching operations Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - The site re-uses etch solution as starter chemicals during preventative maintenance (PM), to offset the use of fresh etchant. All used solution is recycled off-site, including compatible chemicals used during a PM, for the manufacturing of animal feed. Source Reduction: Source Reduction - the site is improving its etching operations to maximize efficiency and lower the amount of raw material (chemicals) used. |
2018 |
Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W13: Regular pH monitoring and adjustments to optimal operational practices. The facility targets periodic maintenance of equipment; this in turn helps minimize overdosing of the toxic chemical into the process. Source Reduction - Continued and improved chemical control at specified pH for optimal performance of the chemical dosing. The equipment ventilation for the process gets a better monitoring of a tighter operational range. |
2017 |
Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W13: Maintenance of processing equipment, including chemical maintenance is conducted on a monthly basis, as oppose to on as-needed basis, to ensure the efficiency of the operation. Chemical replenishment and analysis receive more frequent checks for better control, and to avoid chemical unbalance and change out. Source Reduction - The chemical control department monitors chemical change out, and re-uses the chemical for production. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - The used chemical of concern is contained in a mixture material used for feedstock used for the manufacturing of animal feed by Micronutrients (vendor). |
