Source Reduction: Source Reduction - SCA believes the source of the lead in the wastewater is in trace amounts in the raw materials we use. We have quality controls or checks/reviews on the incoming wastepaper and/or chemicals we use in the process, but these are limited. Analytical test results from sludge samples collected as part of our solid waste profile for ADEM have not shown any levels of lead in the sludge from testing collected in 2014, 2015, and 2016. |

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - SCA believes the source of the lead in the wastewater and sludge are in trace amounts in the raw materials we use. We have quality controls or checks/reviews on the incoming wastepaper and/or chemicals we use in the process, but these are limited. |

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - 7. OtherLead is present in trace amounts in various chemicals and incoming raw materials. We will evaluate reviewing these chemicals for scrutiny or replacement, but some chemicals are used based on quality or safety, which may not be easily replaced. Another source of the trace lead is in the incoming recycled wastepaper the facility uses. Since the sources of wastepaper is almost infinite, it is practically infeasible to control incoming lead which may not be present or which may only be present in ppm or ppb quantities. However, since SCA promotes sustainability and has an philosophy of continual environmental improvement, this concern will be evaluated when feasible.Since lead is present in trace amounts and the facility has not done routine testing in the past, then the lead may or may not show up in the effluent wastewater or in the sludge shipped to the landfill. More testing will be done in the future to monitor this variation. |
