2022 |
Source Reduction:: S23: Implemented new technology, technique, or process
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
|
S23: Use of selective soldering for leaded components and connectors. Improvement in the application of soldering paste to CCA during manufacturing. Use of Lead metal in soldering electronic components will remain a requirement in the future as it in the most stable and reliable material critical systems for Space and Sensors applications. Source Reduction - Use of Gemba teams in each production area of manufacturing to continuously drive improvement and waste out of the processes |

S23: Use of selective soldering tool and improvements in application of soldering paste to CCA during manufacturing. |
2020 |
Source Reduction:: W21: Instituted procedures to ensure that materials do not stay in inventory beyond

2019 |
Source Reduction:: W74: Improved application techniques
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program) |
W74: Use of selective solder equipment to replace wave soldering tool. Source Reduction - Vendor demostrated how selective solder produces less waste by reducing drose formation from a small molten solder pot size producing less waste and less material to be recycled. |
2018 |
Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping[-25-49%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program) |
W52: Replaced larger Wave Solding equipment with smaller Selective Solder equipment. The Selective Solder equipment has a smaller solder pot and application nozzle which reduces the amount of waste solder produced when cleaning and greater reduces the formation of waste solder dross. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Solder in the form of solder dross, solder wire, solder bar, tinned leads, and solder paste are recovered to reclaim the Lead and Zinc metal that they contain. |

Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
|
W52: The manufacturing process is reducing the use of wave soldering methods to attach electronic components. Selective solder equipment is being used to attach electronic components to printed circuit cards and boards. Selective solder machines uses a 100 times smaller solder pot which creates much less waste dross and waste lead material going to metal recycling. This process change will continue over the next two years. Source Reduction - Management, Engineering, employees, and customers working together to implement the Lead reduction activity Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Solder containing Tin and Lead is collected along with tinned wire leads and soldering tips are recycled. Solder dross, waste solder wire and waste solder paste is recycled. |
2016 |
Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
|
W52: Purchase of Selective Soldering tool to reduce the use of the Wave Soldering tool Source Reduction - Engineering along with management in cooperation with customer are implementing the use selective soldering tool to replace wave soldering equipment. This is a multi year project to reduce solder usage which in turn will reduce lead usage. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Solder dross, solder metal, age controlled solder materials go to a metal recovery refiner. |

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Lead solders used by L-3 Cincinnati Electronic to assemble electronic components are customer required based on military specification set forth for our products from the Department of Defense. Source Reduction: Source Reduction - L-3 Cincinnati Electronics has invested in new equipment to reduce the amount of solder used to assembly electronic components onto circuit boards. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - L-3 Cincinnati Electronics accumulates and recycles solder metal, solder dross, and materials tinned with solder from electronic assembly to avoiding the treatment of this material as hazardous waste. |

Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
|
Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Leaded solders are required by Cincinnati Electronic customers to attach electronic components to circuit boards. The alternate non-Leaded solders are not as reliable. Cincinnati Electronic products go into Department of Defense Military Aircraft, Land, and Sea systems and vehicles used in outer space. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Cincinnati Electronics treated more Lead gross as recyclable material to reduce the amount of Lead being treated as hazardous waste. This program started in 2013 and ran the entire year of 2014 increasing the amount of Lead recycled by 850 pounds. |
|
2013 | Other Environmental Practices - in 2013 Cincinnati Electronic began treating its solder dross from manufacturing to recovery Lead Metal. |
