Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. |
S03: We are constantly evaluating new coatings to try to reduce the amount of emissions and releases. But, the new coatings have to work just as well or better so this takes time to evaluate. Source Reduction - Currently working with our vendors to try to reduce the amounts of solvents/blends in use. Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - We need to make sure that the new coatings will perform as good or better than the current ones. The customers will not appreciate a new product that is more difficult to use or does not work as well. |

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. |
S03: The Product Development department is looking at alternative adhesives both water borne and solvent borne to limit the use of toluene. Source Reduction - Working with the vendors to see if the current or future adhesives can use a different blend of solvents or additives. Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - By changing solvent blends, the properties of the adhesives that our customers rely on could change and have a negative effect on their customers or it's use. That is why the changing of the solvent blends or additives is a long process, all of the changes have to put through the processes at the vendors, our plant, and the final customer. |

W52: A new RTO was purchased and installed. The testing showed a destruction efficiency of 99%. The older one had a destruction efficiency of 98.5%. Source Reduction - The purchase of the new RTO allowed us to use an additional 30% of adhesives (growth for the company) and only emit and additional 3% of VOc's. |

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We continue to recycle our wash solvents and reuse them. We have already removed two waste streams from our facility by recycling of wash solvents. Source Reduction: Source Reduction - We have tried various adhesives and our customers do not approve of these new adhesives, but we continue to strive to find other adhesives to replace some of the solvent based adhesives. |

Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We are recycling our wash solvents, thus recycling some toluene. The possibility of trying to recycle some of our products to reduce this even more. Currently we have not started but are looking into it. Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - We have tried some substitute adhesives. Their performance was not as good as the current product our customers are purchasing. If we switch to a different adhesive, we would probably lose customers. |

2017 |
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.
|
Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We will continue to recycle our wash solvent, this will help to stop using fresh solvent and disposing of it. Currently we are around 90% efficient and will work to get better. Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - The customer ordering the products that contain the adhesives that use toluene as a solvent is what drives the use of these adhesives. These adhesives have a very specific use in the market and we have not been able to find a substitute adhesive that works as well as these do. |

W19: We purchased a pot still to recycle our cleaning solvents. This has been in use since June of 2016 and has been working very well. We don't use a lot of toluene in our cleaning solvent, so we haven't recycled a great amount of this. But we have eliminated 2 complete waste streams from our hazardous waste because of this. Source Reduction - The ability to recycle our waste solvent so that it does not go outside of the plant to be treated or disposed of. Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - A pot still type of solvent recycler was added to the facility in June of 2016. This allows for the elimination of the solvent waste stream that contains a small amount of toluene. This was running for 6 months of the year, so the numbers should go up higher for the recycling in 2017. |
2015 |
Barriers: B7-No Information B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.
|
Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We have just installed a solvent recycler in June of 2016. We will hopefully be able to reclaim some of the toluene that is sent for off-site disposal. |

Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
|
Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Solvent borne adhesives perform better in most exterior applications, therefore the customer orders those adhesives that they deem better for their application. We have started using more water borne adheisves, but that will take time for our customers to get the experience with them. |

Source Reduction:: W14: Changed production schedule to minimize equipment and feedstock changeovers

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
|
W14: W14 - Production and Scheduling departments are working together to minimize product change overs that will help reduce the waste of raw materials. |
2011 | Source Reduction - While our emissions are up around 12% to 14% our throughput has gone up by around 20% in gallons of materials used. So, we are using more water-based coatings to help try to get our releases down. | ||
