Source Reduction - Cadmium was used as an alloy product in certain types of cells manufactured previously. A new alloy product '2025' was devleloped and the old alloy 'MFX' has been discontinued from manufacture. Last batch of MFX alloy was run fall of 2009. During the early part of 2010, activities to remove obsolete alloy and scrapping of leftover grids & items occured. Additional shipments of Cd materials are expected to be limited to spent lead acid batteries manufactured previous to October 2009 returned from customers under warranty for replacement. Scrapped battereis containing Cd are segregated and shipped to a licensed facilty for recycling, Newalta in Quebec or Doe Run in Missouri. Future shipments of scrap are expected to continue to decrease as fewer items are being returned under warranty. |
2009 | Source Reduction - Exide is phasing out cadmium containing alloys from its products; this began in fall of 2009 after last production run of MFX alloys for a US NAVY order; focus in last quarter of 2009 & 2010 is to cleanup and dispose of remaining cadmium containing materials; there should be significant decrease in the 2010 Form R filing to reflect that. 2011 Form R should show no Cadmium.
2008 | Source Reduction - 1) Plant is implementing scrap reduction activities that should see proportioal reduction (Cadmiium % alloyed in specific lead scrap) in Cadmium sent out for metals recovery. 2) Current economic downturn and resulting reduction in orders has already decreased use of antimony alloy over same time period last year.
