Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - The primary driver, as the product methyl chlorocarbonate is made in a batch process, is the need to clean the system in between product switches. There was a substantial increase in the number of product switches in calendar year 2014 over 2013. Treatment of methyl chlorocarbonate was completed primarily by hydrolysis in 2014; it was this process change that contributed to the increase of off-site treatment of methanol 2014 over 2013 as methanol is the hydrolysis by-product of methyl chlorocarbonate. Additionally, methanol is also used in reactor cleaning operations the frequency of which is primarily determined by product switches. |

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Methanol as a TRI chemical is generated as a result of treatment of methyl chloroformate. The result of this treatment generates a less toxic compound, methanol. The amount of methanol genertated in proportion to production rates and efficiencies. |
