Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Chromium is used in the metallurgy of the grinding rods, balls and mill liners. The metallurgy may differ slightly from one manufacturer to another, however, the main reason for changes in the amount of this chemical release from year to year is the throughput of ore as well as the hardness of the ore. |

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The chromium is found in the grinding media used in the milling process. The metallurgical makeup of the grinding media may change from one year to the next depending on the manufacturer of the grinding media product. Another factor is the amount of ore milled as well as the hardness of the ore which may increase wear on grinding media. |

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - The principal release is to land from grinding media tails. A change in the mineralogical composition of the ore can affect its hardness leading to increased wear of grinding media. In addition, processing of slag could also increase wear of grinding media. Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - The unique characteristic of metal mining is that the location of a mine is determined by geological occurrence. This means that the composition of an orebody, i.e., valuable minerals associated with the product and co-products, as well as impurity minerals, referred to as gangue, is dictated by location and geology. This restricts the extent to which virgin material use and waste production can be reduced and limits opportunities for source reduction. |

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Chromium is a constituent of the grinding media used in the milling process. The chemical is a necessary component of the steel grinding media as it hardens the steel making it more resilient in the grinding process. New metallurgical information on grinding media was available which shows a reduction in total amount of chromium in media. |
