Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The amount of Copper and Copper Compounds reported is based on blasting materials used for the year. Other sources of these chemicals are not reported (tailings based on Barrick vs. Whitman decision and waste rock). |

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S14: Asarco Mission did not process any slag during the reporting period so amount of copper and copper compounds reported was reduced. Ore was also <1% for copper compounds. |

Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - The unique characteristic of metal mining is that the location of a mine is determined by geological occurrence. This means that the composition of an orebody, i.e., valuable minerals associated with the product and co-products, as well as impurity minerals, referred to as gangue, is dictated by location and geology. This restricts the extent to which virgin material use and waste production can be reduced and limits opportunities for source reduction. The principal release to land is due to the processing of Hayden smelter slag In the Mission North and South Mill as a supplementary raw material to raise ore grade. |
2016 | Source Reduction - There were no stormwater events in 2016, thus no water releases. Also, much less copper wire in blasting was used in 2016 compared to 2015. The number reduction in land releases directly correlates to this. | ||

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Majority of copper chemical release is copper mineral that is not recovered in the milling/flotation process. There are no known alternative technologies that exist that can recover 100% of the copper mineral in the milling/flotation process. |
