Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. |
Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Diatomic nitrogen bonds are too strong to break at temperatures the equipment will live through. Dimethyl hydrazine is an option, but it is more toxic and more dangerous than the ammonia. Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - We're using ammonia in a highly sensitive pyrolytic decomposition process for creating LEDs. This is Gallium Nitride technology. We've eliminated all the original wasteful steps from the process already. |

Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.
|
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - We are working with a supplier on capture/reuse technology development, which has not proven to be successful to date. Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - The product requires a nitrogen feed to grow gallium nitride. Ammonia is currently the most cost effective source to meet this need. Hydrazine was evaluated in the past without success. |

Source Reduction:: W50: Optimized reaction conditions or otherwise increased efficiency of synthesis[-0-4%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
|
W50: There is a purge phase of the process which was minimized to reduce the volume of gases. |
2015 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - We're working with a supplier on a recycling unit, but we only have an alpha proof of concept so far - so it hasn't resulted in measurable improvements. |

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
|
W58: The engineering team evaluated the warm up and cool down cycles and optimized the gas flow to minimize wasted gases. Source Reduction - The motivation for the reduction was to save money for process gases. The team found opportunities to minimize wasted gases. |
2012 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - There are limitations on the efficiency of the process based on ceiling temperature limits within the reactor and the sensitivty of the other input materials. Therefore the cracking efficiency within the nitride deposition tool is poor - resulting in higher ammonia use. |

|
Source Reduction - In 2011, we implemented a change from 3" wafers to 6" wafers. The result is greater surface area output per unit of input. |
2008 | Other Environmental Practices - We're currently evaluating moving from a 3" substrate to possibly a 6" substrate to produce more parts per unit of hazardous material. Implementation would be measured in years. | ||
