S03: In 2019, Orenco Systems, Inc. began using a Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) based, thermoset resin as an alternate material to styrene based polyester resins in specific production lines. Unlike styrene, DCPD is not a hazardousair pollutant (HAP), and VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions of this chemical are much less that those of styrene from identical manufacturing processes. Orenco has since switched 2 more, major production lines from styrene based resins to DCPD. As a result, in 2021, our company wide HAP emissions from styrene were 16% less than in 2019, for an annual average reduction of 8%. Source Reduction - Deliberate change of production process and raw materials to increase durability of product, and decrease waste and production time. Other Environmental Practices - Orenco Systems, Inc. uses styrene based, polyester resins to manufacture fiberglass reinforced plastic products. Styrene is a hazardous air pollutant (HAP). Orenco manufactures its largest and highest volume products using closed mold processes such as "resin transfer molding" and vacuum infusion. Closed mold processes keep the resin enclosed while curing and are a superior means of pollution control in our industry, significantly reducing HAP emissions. We are able to reduce HAP emissions by 200% to 300% per reporting year by using closed mold instead of open mold processes. |

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Orenco System's, Inc. uses styrene containing resins to manufacture fiberglass reinforced plastic products. Syrene is a hazardous air pollutant (HAP). Orenco manufactures its largest and highest volume products using closed mold processes such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and vacuum infusion. Closed mold processes keep the resin enclosed while curing, and are a superior means of pollution control, significantly reducing HAP emissions. We typically see a 200% to 300% reduction in HAP emissions per reporting year by using closed mold technologies as opposed to open mold ones.
