Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2024 Source Reduction:: S33: Improved containment or material handling operations
Source Reduction:: S04: Substituted manufacturing aid, processing aid, or other ancillary chemical
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
S04: Eliminated use of an acid inhibitor chemical that turned out to be unneeded.

2023 Source Reduction:: S23: Implemented new technology, technique, or process[-5-14%]
Source Reduction:: S06: Other material modifications made
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
S06: Eliminated the use of an acid inhibitor chemical. This chemical was supposed to reduce acid consumption, but it turns out it was ineffective.

Source Reduction - Purchased a new technology boiler which we hope will reduce Natural Gas consumption by a significant amount.
2022 Source Reduction:: S31: Instituted better labeling, testing, or other inventory management practices[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
S31: Using Airtable databases to track supply inventory, dangerous waste accumulation and management, waste profiles and manifests.

Source Reduction - Stormwater pollution prevention team identifies operations improvements and BMPs to to continue reductions to stormwater impacts.
2021 Source Reduction:: S25: Other process modifications made[-5-14%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S25: Increased the amount that galvanizer's skimmings are "worked" or stirred before removing from the galvanizing kettle, decreasing the amount of zinc.

Source Reduction - Observation of process and analysis of the skimming product.
2019 Other Environmental Practices - Natural Gas consumption was reduced by 13% vs. 2018 due to furnace improvements.Electricity consumption was reduced by a further 9% vs. previous year.from the LED lighting conversion.
2018 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
W58: Installed a "dirt box" in the galvanizing kettle to allow the crew to "work" the skimmings to leave more of the zinc in the galvanizing kettle and produce less of the zinc containing byproduct that is tracked in this form R. This resulted in a 20% reduction in skimmings produced per pound galvanized; for 2018 this translates into 43,000 pounds less skimmings produced. This modification was not implemented until July 2018.

Source Reduction - An employee analyzed numbers from times past when a dirt box was used and calculated that up to 40% reduction in skimmings production was possible. This is valuable because less skims produced results in less zinc purchased.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - A new lighting audit identified electricity savings from converting metal halide lamps to LED lamps. Even though the new equipment was not installed until August of 2018, Electricity usage was down more than 17% for the 2018 compared to 2017.

2017 Other Environmental Practices - We do have zinc byproduct reduction strategies being implemented in 2018 that became cost effective due to higher zinc prices. These will be discussed in the RY 2018 report.

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - There are a limited number of strategies for reducing zinc byproduct production; as it happens, no new ones were implemented in 2017.

2015 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Many source reduction activities undertaken in the past, nothing new in 2015.

2014 Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Reduction of zinc used per pound galvanized (while maintaining the coating thickness required in ASTM A123) is a big yet elusive goal. Ace Galvanizing has purchased proprietary technology in the past to help reduce zinc usage and reduce or eliminate use of hazardous materials, but new opportunities do not come along every year.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - The vast majority of zinc byproducts leaving Ace Galvanizing are recycled, and the zinc reused. Zinc is a highly recyclable material, and Hot-Dip Galvanizing a highly sustainable practice with the lowest environmental footprint in the coating industry.

2013 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W49: Other raw material modifications

W49: Purchased a prorpietary technology that improves galvanizing with lead-free zinc, and is also supposed to reduce the zinc containing byproducts that we recycle off'site.
W58: Added an ion-exchange system to the stormwater treatment system. This should reduce the ammount of zinc in the stormwater.

Source Reduction - Identified opportunity with assistance from a galvanizing consultant.
2008 Source Reduction:: W65: Redesigned parts racks to reduce dragout

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Other Environmental Practices - Installed an enhanced sandfilter system in 2007 that provides active treatment to the stormwater prior to discharge. This has greatly reduce the amount of zinc in the stormwater from this facility.
