2022 |
Source Reduction:: S23: Implemented new technology, technique, or process
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
|
S23: Implemented an Alternative Surface process for specific line of tubes that reduces the amount of etching needed for final tubes. This reduces the consumption of acid when processing those products. The impact of this alternative should grow in the next 5-10 years as Aerospace customers can begin placing orders for this method of production. Source Reduction - Engineering R&D, followed by presentation and acceptance of the data to the regulating bodies for the standards to which the product is manufactured to. |

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Changes to the manufacturing process are constrained by the Aerospace and nuclear standards to which the product is required to meet. |

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Alternate surface finishing methods been developed and Test Pieces of tubing using those methods have to be certified for each source material, size and type of tub produced. Thoses trial samples are awaiting testing at a certified lab. Once certified, those specific products can be produced with reduced acid etching (using HF acid) and thus reducing the HF treated and released by the facility. This is a 2-3 year timeframe to begin floor production using the alternate method. |

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Completed engineering report of Wastewater treatment in 2016, submitted to WA Dept. of Ecology. Treatment options are not economically or technically feasible at the low concentrations generated by the facility. |

2014 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The production process that uses the chemicals for etching is a frozen process and cannot be changed as the products are supplied to Nuclear and Aerospace industries. Long term reduction efforts are under way to revise the process. |
