Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical
| Reporting Year | Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity | Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity | Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 |
Source Reduction:: S31: Instituted better labeling, testing, or other inventory management practices[-5-14%]
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. |
S31: The lab developed a GC method and 5-point calibration curve to measure low levels of alcohol (<500 ppm) in water. This allowed for further optimization of our process operation and more accurate monitoring of the effluent stream Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - |
| 2023 |
Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency[-15-24%]
Source Reduction:: S24: Modified or updated equipment or layout[-0-4%] |
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program) |
S21: Optimized and improved the automation control of the methanol refining towers. This reduced the trace amount of methanol lost to the process water and lowered the amount of methanol transferred to waste water treatment. S24: A permanent piping system was added that eliminated the use of temporary hoses during a non-routine mode switching operation. The elimination of hoses also eliminated the release of methanol associated with connecting and disconnecting/draining hoses. Source Reduction - Coordinated study between internal engineering and operations and a 3rd party lab to monitor concentrations in waste water |

Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency[-0-4%]
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. |
S21: Optimized distillation tower operation to increase product yields and reduce losses to byproduct/waste streams Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Further tower optimization to reduce losses will begin to increase impurities in the product and risk exceeding a quality limit |
| 2021 |
Source Reduction:: S24: Modified or updated equipment or layout[-0-4%]
|
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T02: External pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
|
S24: Replaced two pumps that had mechanical seals with seal-less magnetic drive pumps, reducing the potential fugitive emissions Source Reduction - Leaking pump seals were detected by TEAM, a 3rd party LDAR inspection contractor |
