Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2024 Source Reduction:: S12: Altered dimensions, components, or final design of product[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas
S12: Leidos still offers NON-LEADED x-ray shielding to customers which off-sets the total amount of Lead Components in our product. Tungsten, while more expensive than lead, is a Greener Technology.

Source Reduction - Sales and Engineering teams continue to test newer alternatives to Lead Curtains to offer Lead Free to customers worldwide.

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Lead Free X-Ray Shielding and Protection from X-Rays is still very costly for customers and for manufacturing in the x-ray industry. Therefore, Lead Shielding Technology remains the industry standard as opposed to Lead Free Shielding.Lead Curtains are being replaced with Tungsten Curtains, however, there is an increased cost to the customer.

2023 Source Reduction:: S12: Altered dimensions, components, or final design of product[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
S12: Leidos continues to replace lead x-ray curtains with less hazardous Tungsten Curtains as a greener alternative for customers. This removes lead from waste streams.

Source Reduction - Sales and engineering teams continue to test newer alternatives to Lead Curtains and recommend Lead-Free x-ray curtains to customers.
2022 Source Reduction:: S12: Altered dimensions, components, or final design of product
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
S12: Within one x-ray product line, called ClearScan Cabinet X-Ray systems, the manufacturing and engineering team has worked closely with the curtain manufacturers to switch away from lead containing x-ray shielding curtains, to non-lead material, Tungsten, as an option to customers.

Source Reduction - Internal Engineers, Safety, and Quality staff worked very closely with external customers and test facilities to switch from Lead Curtains to Tungsten curtains on one product line.
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Leidos will continue to recommend to all customers of ClearScan X-Ray product line to purchase only Tungsten based curtains as opposed to lead curtains. There is an increase in pricing to the customer due to higher cost of tungsten metal, however the environmental benefits far outweigh the use of lead in curtains in legacy systems.

2021 Source Reduction:: S14: Other product modifications made[-0-4%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
S14: Lead Curtains in 2021 are being replaced by Tungsten Curtains by product line; and will result in lead reduction for users and OEM manufacturing.

Source Reduction - OEM vendor of Lead Shielding components have been submitting test samples and working with Leidos staffing on reduction of Lead Based shielding products (lead curtains).
Source Reduction - Leidos Engineering teams are continuing to test NON-LEAD and LEAD-FREE alternatives for X-Ray Shielding technologies. The change-over from Lead to Lead-Free is a slow process.

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - The primary shielding for X-Ray Components in most of the world-community remains to be METALLIC LEAD due to its low cost, availability and excellent power to reduce x-rays on x-ray generating devices and used as a shielding component. With increased world-wide regulatory pressure to reduce lead, Tungsten, a metal with higher cost and much less toxic, is slowly becoming an alternative to Lead Shielding. Our Leidos engineering teams has started with the replacement of Lead Curtains but replacement is still in trials and continued testing at airports worldwide.
