Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Lead anodes are disposed of approximately every 5 to 10 years. Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Lead is used in hard chrome plating of printing plates as a sacrificial anode. Lead compounds are created from this. Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - 11 lead anodes are required in each of three tanks for hard chrome plating to maintain quality of the finished product. It is estimated that each lead anode has an approximate life span of 10 years. Currently, only two chrome plating tanks are operational. A new plating line will be commissioned in mid-2023 and the current decommissioned. Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - There is a wastewater pre-treatment plant onsite that treats facility process influent prior to discharge to the POTW. Periodic sampling is performed after treatment and at the discharge outfall to the POTW to satisfy City of Fort Worth discharge permit requirements. Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Lead is used in hard chrome plating of printing plates as a sacrificial anode. There is a PVD technology that is being tested but not necessarily proven for currency production purposes. |

Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Current hard chromium plating tanks are 250 gallons each and only two of three are operating. Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Given the need for plate hardness and using the lead anodes as sacrificial. Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Currency plates use hard chrome plating utilizing lead anodes. The lead anodes are 94% lead and 6% tin. Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - There is a wastewater pre-treatment plant on site that treats facility process influent prior to discharge to the POTW. Periodic sampling is performed after treatment and at the discharge outfall to the POTW to satisfy City of Fort Worth discharge permit requirements. Source Reduction: Methods for Identifying Pollution Prevention Opportunities - Treasury continues to consider an alternative technology to using lead anodes for hard chrome plating currency plates. Feasibility, testing, and special requirements would need to be met prior to its implementation. Quality standards would still need to be met. Other Barriers to Source Reduction - There is a wastewater pre-treatment plant on site that treats facility process influent prior to discharge to the POTW. Periodic sampling is performed after treatment and at the discharge outfall to the POTW. Our industrial wastewater discharge permit with the local municipality allows for a limit for this contaminant to be discharged to the POTW. We were within this limit for CY2018. A new plating line is to be installed in CY2020. Source Reduction: Methods for Identifying Pollution Prevention Opportunities - Treasury is considering an alternative technology to using lead anodes for chrome plating currency plates in the future. Feasibility, testing, and special requirements would need to be met prior to implementation. Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - 11 lead anodes are required in each tank for hard chrome plating to maintain quality on the finished product. It is estimated that each lead anode will last approximately 10 years.
