Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
S21: The site has improved the process with small changes impacting the efficiency of the equipment.

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The site has been working on continous improvement activities to improve efficiency and stability of the process.

Source Reduction: Source Reduction - The facility is looking at switching from methanol to other solvents in future product development.

2021 Source Reduction:: S41: Improved scheduling, record keeping, or procedures for operations, cleaning, and maintenance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S41: The process has been stabilized and optimized.

Source Reduction - Process improvement opportunities
2020 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Barriers: B4-Barriers to P2 B4 - Source reduction activities were implemented but were unsuccessful.
W13: Many items run in 2019 were prototypes. In 2020 there has been the opportunity for process stabilization.

Source Reduction - Process improvement opportunities

Barriers to P2: B4 - Source reduction activities were implemented but were unsuccessful. - Customer acceptance is an issue for changing chemistry. New products can evaluate other extraction solvents.

2019 Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping

Source Reduction:: W56: Reduced or eliminated use of an organic solvent

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W52: Equipment upgrades for improved operations.
W56: Newer products are looking at production processes that do not use methanol.

2018 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W13: The facility tracks maintenance activities and uses break/fix for trends that require modification to schedules.

Source Reduction - Continous improvement and statsistical analysis as well as FMEA's help determine ways to improve equipment operation, reduce scrap and increase yield.
Source Reduction - The engineering team reviews the data and determines changes to scheduled PM.
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Products approved for a customer require customer change to implement equipment changes, and raw material substitution. Future products can take into consideration other solvents and or equipment changes.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - The facility is in the process of implementing an Environmental Management system and obtaining certification, anticipated in 2020.

2017 Source Reduction:: W71: Other cleaning and degreasing modifications[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Source Reduction - Installed filters to help reuse methanol. Also looking at other solvents.

Source Reduction: Source Reduction - identifying other potential solvents.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Installed filter to recirculate and use some of the methanol longer.

2016 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W13: The facility continues to use preventative maintenance more to sustain equipment.

Source Reduction - Mechanics and engineers review scrap and quality data. The facility is also tracking maintenance and break fix to identify trends.
*Classifications of Optional Pollution Prevention Information shown in brackets are provided by EPA.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
