Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - chemical is part of mfg formulation

2021 Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Chemical is part of mfg formulation, no alternative at this time

2020 Source Reduction:: W72: Modified spray systems or equipment

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Source Reduction - Finish products mfg made recommendations in formulation that yielded significant reduction
Source Reduction - Monitored by management & 1st line employees with a goal of reducing use.
2019 Source Reduction:: W15: Introduced an in-line product quality monitoring or other process analysis system
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
W15: Installed Point of Use injection system, simply used less in the overall process

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Chemical is part of larger manufacturer formulation, alternatives or substitution not probable

2018 Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Formulation of finish & solvent products is spec by mfg.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Considering purchase of larger recycler for on-site recovery

2015 Other Environmental Practices - This is a chemical that's scheduled for reduction through our mfg. overall % reduction is dependent on finding a suitable alternative. Use of Trimethylbenzene was up in 2015 due to mfg. production use.

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Finish mfg. formulates base materials, this chemical is spec'd by mfg. Seeking alternatives for future formula's

2014 Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
Barriers: B4-Barriers to P2 B4 - Source reduction activities were implemented but were unsuccessful.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Due to significant changes in finish formulation the results of recycling & recovery was diminished. Researching alternative methods, products and chemicals.

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Chemical is essential to overall process/gunwash formulation

Barriers to P2: B4 - Source reduction activities were implemented but were unsuccessful. - Throughout 2014 we tried to reformulate process/gunwash formula's without success. This is ongoing throughout 2015 and beyond.

2013 Source Reduction:: W33: Installed overflow alarms or automatic shutoff valves
Source Reduction:: W72: Modified spray systems or equipment

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T07: State government technical assistance program
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
W33: Installed auto-detect process for leaks with auto-shutoff to minimize loss

Source Reduction - Primary decrease is due to reformulation which reduced to initial percentage of chemical used.
2012 Source Reduction:: W72: Modified spray systems or equipment

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T07: State government technical assistance program
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
2011 Source Reduction:: W72: Modified spray systems or equipment

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T07: State government technical assistance program
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
W72: With vendor assist spray application was modified to reduce chemical use

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
