Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Source Reduction:: S04: Substituted manufacturing aid, processing aid, or other ancillary chemical
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S04: more options for using lead free solder

Source Reduction: Source Reduction - using lead free solder

2021 Source Reduction:: S06: Other material modifications made
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S06: Changes and efficiencies in processing resulted in less use of certain materials

Source Reduction - Certain processes have been updated for efficiency
2019 Source Reduction:: W68: Improved rinse equipment operation

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
W68: We continue to see improvements in the use of the nitrogen filled wave solder devices. Limiting oxidation of solder reduces the amount of dross that needs to be removed from the solder pot.

Source Reduction - There is an annual comparison of chemical purchases including solder from year to year
Source Reduction - Constant monitoring of risks ands opportunities
2018 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
W58: We continue to see improvements in the use of the nitrogen filled wave solder devices. Limiting oxidation of solder reduces the amount of dross that need to be removed from the solder pot.

Source Reduction - There is an annual comparison of chemical purchases including solder from year to year.
2017 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
W58: We continue to see improvements via the use of the nitrogen-filled wave solder devices. Limiting oxidation of solder reduces the amount of dross that needs to be skimmed from the solder pot. Reduced oxidation means we purchase much less solder over the course of the year; a portion of which is a TRI-reportable material.

Source Reduction - Annually we review all chemical/part purchases and, in this case, compare our solder purchases from year to year.
2016 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W58: Nitrogen filled soldering equipment was purchased which limits the amount of solder oxidation thus reducing the amount of solder needing to be purchased as much less solder dross is formed. This change has reduced the amount of dross and, by extension, lead at our facility by thousands of pounds annually.

Source Reduction - Equipment improvements in the industry have allowed for reduced TRI chemical usage.
2014 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications[-25-49%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
W58: New solder equipment was obtained and is nitrogen filled which reduces oxidation and the amount of dross that needs to be removed from the pot. Because of the reduced solder dross generation, we were able to reduce the overall amount of solder ordered.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Steps were implemented this reporting year to increase the amount of lead recovered from waste in lieu of stabilization.

2013 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Other Environmental Practices - Began recycling all lead contaminated waste for metal recovery rather than sending it to a permitted land stabilization TSD.
2012 Other Environmental Practices - Measures have been initiated in CY2013 to increase the amount of lead reclaimed as opposed to stabilized. Equipment is being considered which would use less lead.

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Lead is necessary to produce finished product and its use is directly proportional to output.

2008 Source Reduction - With the increase of production levels in the past few years we have switched some of our articles to use no lead solders. We continue to look at no lead and implement when possible.
*Classifications of Optional Pollution Prevention Information shown in brackets are provided by EPA.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
