Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2021
Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We send all our production waste to a recycling facility

2020 Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We send all waste to a recycling facility

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Customer requirements

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - It's use is specified by our Customers

2017 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Generated by our Customer's requirements.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - We recycle as a whole all throughout our facility.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We use only Recycling companies that have DEP stack tested and permitted equipment, which lend to our peace of mind.

2016 Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W52: We have now purchased a Lead-Free wave in hopes of producing more Lead-free boards.

Source Reduction - This is up to our customers, however we are hoping with being able to give them more options at better prices we will be able to push more towards lead-free
2015 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W58: We are purchasing a Lead-free wave to encourage our customer's to use this process when possible

Source Reduction - Management Review and meetings made it apparent that a lead -free wave would help current operations and lead customers to use this process more. Management agreed to purchase this machine for our process.

Barriers to P2: Source Reduction - We are hoping that our customers will take advantage of our Lead-free manufacturing processes, however this is generated by our customer and their needs.

2014 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - This use of lead solder is dictated by our customer's for various reasons. We have no say over what type of solder they use on their boards.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - The company we use to handle our recycling has constructed and installed a "state of the art" pollution abatement control system to recycle solder dross. With the evolvement of EPA regulations and generator superfund risk, it was imperative our recycling company be in the forefront of environmentally safe solder dross recycling. Also during this period of time, the Company's principals installed a chemical process to recycle the precious metal material shipped for recycling.

2013 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W22: Began to test outdated material - continue to use if still effective

Source Reduction:: W31: Improved storage or stacking procedures
Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Barriers to P2 - Apart from recycling the product containing lead off-site, there is not much we can do since our customer's dictate if they would like lead-free or not. The industry (parts availability) is making it more difficult to obtain parts containing lead and therefore this pushes most of our SMT customers to use Lead-Free solder paste.
2012 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W22: Began to test outdated material - continue to use if still effective

Source Reduction:: W31: Improved storage or stacking procedures
Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
2011 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W31: Improved storage or stacking procedures
Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Source Reduction - We have replaced a machine used for lead-free soldering. This new machine has a greater degree of process control, which allows us to be more confident and agressive in quoting jobs that are ROHS compliant.
2010 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W31: Improved storage or stacking procedures
Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Source Reduction - We are a contract manufacturer and are affected by whatever our customer orders and what they use to build their product. We have made our pricing fair and reasonable to encourage Lead-Free soldering. We have added ROHS stations and automatic equipment that is specific to the Lead-Free process.
2009 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W31: Improved storage or stacking procedures
Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Source Reduction - We have encouraged our customers with pricing and new equipment to go ROHS compliant, therefore using no lead metals in the production of their circuit boards.
2008 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
2007 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Source Reduction - Many components and circuit board assemblies have been required to go lead-Free. We have thus purchased and used some lead-Free solders to conform to these new requirements.
2006 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Source Reduction - Many components and circuit board assemblies have been required to go lead-free. We have thus purchased and used some lead-free solders to conform to these new requirements.
*Classifications of Optional Pollution Prevention Information shown in brackets are provided by EPA.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
