W58: Shifted the red product line from one process to an improved process. (VTF). The new process is less nitric intensive. Source Reduction - New process to shift from 3" wafers to 6" wafers. Eliminated some significant steps involving nitric acid. |

W19: Improvements in process: bath life extension, more wafers per batch. Source Reduction - Cost reduction efforts to efficiently utilize materials and chemicals. |
2012 |
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The volumes of nitric acid went up significantly this reporting period. We found that the existing process in the use of aqua regia for cleaning activities went far beyond the end of life of the solution. This resulted in parts which were still contaminated after cleaning. Therefore the bath lifespan was redefined based on the actual solution strength. This increased the changout of the bath to a significantly higher frequency. |

Source Reduction - The nitric acid is used in one area to clean the bubblers. The bubblers were challenging to clean because the bubbler medium would evaporate (Ethylene glycol). This caused the captured solids to crystallize on the bottom of the bubbler and could only be removed with aqua regia (Nitric and hydrochloric acid). We added a chilled water cooling coil to the ethylene glycol in the bubbler. This prevented the heat from driving off the ethylene glycol in the bubbler. Therefore, the solids remained suspended in the solution and are cleaned simply with water. |

The Waste Management Hierarchy |
The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes.
The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed
by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
