W58: Stopped burning bark. Source Reduction - Replaced bark burning power boiler with Natural gas and Source Reduction: Source Reduction - We no longer burn bark in our recovery boilers. This has caused a significant decrease in the amount of Barium released from the mill. |

W29: The Mill is currently participating in a beneficial reuse program to help the Mill limit the amount of waste that goes into our onsite landfill. W58: Barium compounds are from naturally occuring wood sources. Paper mills use large quantities of wood, thus reporting is required. In 2016, the Mill ceased all bark firing in its boilers, so that will lead to a reduction in this pollutant. |
2014 |
Source Reduction:: W51: Instituted recirculation within a process

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
|
W51: In February of 2015, the Mill began burning its wastewater treatment plant residuals in its boiler rather than applying to its landfill. This will result in a reduction of this pollutant. Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - The Mill has decreased the amount of loading to its wastewater treatment system by raising awareness and capital projects. This will reduce the amount of wastewater treatment plant residuals. |
The Waste Management Hierarchy |
The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes.
The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed
by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
