Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2017 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - The market is transitioning to lower VOC materials. Over time, this will result in using less of this material. Our customers are driving this change.

2016 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.
Source Reduction - Customers are requesting product with lower VOC content so we are using less of this raw material.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - The market is slowing changing its requirements from high to low VOC content. Over time, this result si sus using less of this raw material. Our customers are driving this change.

2014 Barriers to P2 - We manufacture water-based coatings based on customer demand. Glycol Ethers are a key raw material for which there is no current cost-effective substitute.

Other Barriers to Source Reduction - We manufacture water-based coatings based on customer demand. Glycol Ethers are a key raw material for which there is no current cost-effective substitute.

2013 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - We produce coating products based on customer demands. We have no set product line. This results in raw material requirements being driven by sales.

2012 Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices
Source Reduction:: W32: Improved procedures for loading, unloading, and transfer operations
Source Reduction:: W64: Improved draining procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Other Environmental Practices - The recycling program for this location uses production over-runs and material found out-of-specification but with value, as ingredients for future batches of production.
2011 Source Reduction:: W89: Other product modifications
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Other Environmental Practices - This facility uses production over runs or material found out-Of-Specification but with value as an ingredient for future batches as our recycling process
2010 Source Reduction:: W39: Other spill or leak prevention

Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Source Reduction:: W64: Improved draining procedures

Source Reduction:: W82: Modified design or composition of product
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Source Reduction - Certain glycol ethers are a necessary fomulation component for the coating products manufactured at this facility. Their use in individual products is lessening year-By-Year due to environmental pressures regarding product VOC content. Our use has increased slightly due to the significant increase of our overall output.
2009 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Source Reduction:: W82: Modified design or composition of product
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Source Reduction - We are starting to use other raw materials to substitute for this category of glycol ethers.
2008 Source Reduction - 2-Butoxy Ethanol (Butyl Cellosolve) is slowly being phased out of our products. We prefer to use a NON TRI LISTED Glycol Ether. This phaseout will require several years to complete. It is a currently active project.
2007 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Source Reduction - The Ethylene-based glycol ether is slowly being replaced with a Propylene-based glycol ether that is not TRI listed. This transition started two years ago and is progressing steadily and should result in a significant reduction in Ethylene-based glycol ether by the end of 2008.
2006 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials
Source Reduction:: W82: Modified design or composition of product
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Source Reduction - Quantum Coating is in the process of substituting other NON-TRI raw materials for this CERATIN GLYCOL ETHER as a result of customer requests. Quantum is slowly changing to a NON-TRI listed glycol ether.
2005 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
