Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W13: TPM has been rolled out in half of the plant and has improved the maintenance system by increasing responsiveness and timeliness in equipment repairs. BAE's and TAE's have been added and have improved preventative maintenance of equipment.

Source Reduction - The High Performance Teams continue to mature and improvements seen in operational efficiencies and scrap reduction as a result of team meetings.
Source Reduction - The yellow tag system continues to improve and tasks operators with reporting problems on their lines.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Upgrades were made to the Wastewater Treatment controls to better operate and monitor the process.Additional notifications were added to the baghouse monitoring system to alert personnel of upward trending differential pressures.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W13: Continued improvements to the maintenance system have increased responsiveness and timeliness in equipment repairs. Preventative maintenance scheduling has also greatly improved and virtually eliminated the possibility of missed or significantly overdue PM's.

Source Reduction - A yellow tag system has been implemented that allows operators to report problems on their lines. The yellow tags are collected daily by the Maintenance Department and work orders created and scheduled.
Source Reduction - The High Performance Teams continue to mature and improvements can be seen in operational efficiencies, scrap reduction and equipment improvements as a result of the team meetings.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Modifications have been made to the plant's environmental monitoring systems to provide early detection of potential problems with pollution control devices.

2015 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures

Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping

Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Source Reduction - Self-reporting of work orders has been implemented so operators can enter repairs on the line. Additionally the High Performance Team meetings are an avenue to address operation efficiencies, scrap reduction, and equipment improvements.
Source Reduction - To address missing paste which created plate scrap, the following modifications were made to the pasting lines: modified the paper rollers, added a Teflon plate on the hopper, and installed paper brakes. Mold sensors were installed on 7B's.
Source Reduction - Bad separator material is a byproduct of battery manufacturing, but it was being disposed of as hazardous waste instead of scrap. Process was changed and separator material is included with plate scrap and sent to smelter for metals recovery.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - JCI has implemented a new management system (JCMS) with nine principles - one of which is Environment and Sustainability. This principle has eight objectives - Leadership and Employee Involvement, Risk Assessment, Air, Water and Waste Management, Hazardous Materials and Chemical Management, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Energy and Sustainability and Community and Employee Engagement. Each objective has five levels and manufacturing practices that define each. The Tampa plant has achieved Level 3 for the Environment and Sustainability principle early and JCMS has helped to strengthen environmental management in the plant.

2014 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures

Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Source Reduction - The lead oxide expansion project completed in May 2014 removed a very old mill and replaced it with two new mills. This helped to reduce both fugitive and stack emissions as well as lead in air concentrations. The addition of the two mills has allowed the plant to virtually eliminate the purchase of lead oxide. This reduced spill risks to the plant and GHG emissions associated with the transport of oxide.
2013 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures

Source Reduction:: W14: Changed production schedule to minimize equipment and feedstock changeovers

Source Reduction:: W52: Modified equipment, layout, or piping

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
W13: Maintenance scheduling improved in 2013. The creation of a new maintenance work order system and a maintenance scheduler position contributed.

Source Reduction - HPT teams have been created and scrap reduction is a priority for each production line.
Source Reduction - The lead oxide expansion project that was just completed in May 2014 took a very old mill out of service, and replaced it with two new mills. Removing the old mill eliminated leakage immediately, and we anticipate reductions in fugitive and stack emissions as well as lead in air concentrations. The replacement of the old mill and addition of a third mill has allowed the plant to reduce the amount of lead oxide it must purchase. This reduces the plant's oxide spill risk as well as significantly reduces GHG emissions associated with the transport of oxide from Texas to Florida. The new lead oxide storage tanks and transfer system also significantly reduced leakage, fugitive emissions and lead in air concentrations.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Source Reduction - In 2011 we removed a 7A COS and installed a 7B COS on line 4. The 7B COS installed on 4 was then tied into the same baghouse as the 7B COS on line #3. The main ductwork sizes were changed to obtain necessary velocity''s. The Radco unit which supplied line four COS was removed from service and disposed of. The end result was one less emissions source. In 2011 we replaced the pasting ovens on A & C lines. This improved the lead in air quality in the pasting area. The new ovens also helped reduce assembled battery plate scrap by improving plate quality.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
