Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency[-0-4%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
S21: Increased layer square inches per panel reduces number of panels ran. Feed rate based on panel count. This is done when product size can be fit to larger panels to allow more product per panel.

Source Reduction - Process engineering improved dosing measure to reduce quantity used.
Source Reduction - Product design group looks for ways to maximize panel usage.

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Process control requires maintaining specific concentration/ratios of chemicals. Failure to do so would result in quality issues.

2021 Source Reduction:: S43: Introduced in-line product quality monitoring or other process analysis system
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
S43: process control measures various parameters and adjusts bath value by addition of chemicals.

Source Reduction - Process engineer

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Chemical usage is dependent on product variability, our products are customer driven resulting in some of our production runs requiring higher chemical use.

2020 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Source Reduction - Evaluating potential to alter process to reduce rthe generation of Aerosol
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Primary process that generates the aerosol is strictly driven by production levels.

2019 Source Reduction:: W59: Modified stripping/cleaning equipment
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
W59: Go from a spray application which would generate an aerosol to a flooded application which does not spray but flows solution on the product

Source Reduction - Engineering to retrofit process equipment
2018 Source Reduction:: W72: Modified spray systems or equipment[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
Source Reduction - Process engineer evaluating spray that could reduce aerosol generation

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Process control with various spray patterns is difficult to maintain. Flood application does not allow for tight control.

2017 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Generation of Hydrochloric Aerosols cannot be eliminated due to the spray application associated with the process

2016 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W58: Reevaluated dump triggers to extend life of bath

2014 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Process utilizes in line spray which generates the aerosol. Aerosol is very amenable to treatment.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
