Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Chemical balance is needed to ensure process runs efficiently.

2021 Source Reduction:: S41: Improved scheduling, record keeping, or procedures for operations, cleaning, and maintenance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible
S41: Bath make-up and pm is based on contaminate levels. Action is not conducted as a convenience of unscheduled downtime.

Source Reduction - Process engineer developed PM schedule and dump/remake criteria.

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - In line equipment must spray the chemical onto the product to achieve desired effect and ensure quality of product

2020 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.
Source Reduction - Working to improve process control

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Certain chemistries that contain Sulfuric acid are required to produce the proper surface quality needed. Changing process chemistries that directly effect product is a long process requiring testing and ultimately approval of customers.

2019 Source Reduction:: W58: Other process modifications
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W58: Removed a production line resulting in a large decrease in acid aerosol

Source Reduction - Removed an older process line once the new line was fully proved out.
2018 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures

Source Reduction:: W21: Instituted procedures to ensure that materials do not stay in inventory beyond

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W13: Working with Process engineers to extend chemistry life, had been using time based schedule. Have moved to contaminant level scheduling and tightening up process control limits.
W21: Reduced "in stock" on hand chemistry to ensure inventory will not expire prior to use.

Source Reduction - Process engineers have been directed to maximize chemical usage life. This is being carried out incrementally.
Source Reduction - Process engineer working on process controls.
Source Reduction - Working with vendors to ensure availavility of material when ordered.
2017 Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Removal efficiency for aerosol is 99.99%

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
W58: Working with process engineers to extend useful bath life.

Source Reduction - Processes work on feed and bleed system, working with engineers to fine tune requirements to minimize excessive use.
2015 Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices
Source Reduction:: W43: Substituted a feedstock or reagent chemical with a different chemical
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
W19: Due to production levels some process tanks were shutdown for long periods of time resulting in reduction of chemical use. This is not a true reduction as it relies on production demand. But it is stated here to demonstrate the reduction .
W43: Replaced a sulfuric based microetch with a non-sulfuric based microetch

2014 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Aerosols are produced in our inline spray processes. Aerosol is very amenable to treatment.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
