Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency[-0-4%]
Source Reduction:: S24: Modified or updated equipment or layout[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
S21: Optimize precious metals plating process to reduce plate-out events which result in Nitric being sent out for precious metal reclaimation.
S24: Updated equipment utilizing a nitric based chemistry to reduce dragout and extend use of bath.

Source Reduction - Work with vendor to reduce plate-out events from the precious metal process
Source Reduction - Vendor assisted engineer with process design .

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Product quality becomes a concern when contaminant levels are increased while extending useful life of chemical.

2021 Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Source Reduction - Improved process control on processes that required Nitric stripping due to plate out. Precious metal plate out events required additional nitric use in 2021. Steps have been made to reduce these incidents.
2020 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Precious metal plate out event resulted in Nitric acid being sent off site for Precious metal reclamation and neutralization of acid post recovery.Rework of product caused higher usage and dump and remake of multiple baths resulted in elevated usage.

2019 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas
W13: Worked to create criteria to extend chemical bath use

Source Reduction - Involved process engineer to change the criteria for chemical bath life.
Source Reduction - Process Engineer developed and recommended changes in chenical bath change out criteria.

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - The next step will require evaluation of chemical bath reformulation. This will take time and require customer buy-in to make changes if an alternative can be found.

2018 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Source Reduction:: W21: Instituted procedures to ensure that materials do not stay in inventory beyond
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
W13: Working with Process Engineers to reduce/eliminate time based dump schedules and replace them with contaminant based dump and remake.
W21: Work is ongoing to reduce on hand quantities to ensure material does not expire.

Source Reduction - Working with vendor to ensure availability of materials due to inventory reductions.
Source Reduction - Management has directed Process engineers to evaluate dump schedules and replace time based schedules with contaminant level schedules.
2017 Source Reduction:: W14: Changed production schedule to minimize equipment and feedstock changeovers
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
W14: Working with engineers to extend the bath life and re-evaluate dump and remake trigger values

Source Reduction - Working with engineers to extend the bath life and re-evaluate dump and remake trigger values

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
W58: Work with process engineers to extend bath lifes

Source Reduction - Determined chemical baths were being dumped as a convenience of production, working with process engineers to develop more specific dump triggers to reduce dump and remakes
2015 Source Reduction:: W14: Changed production schedule to minimize equipment and feedstock changeovers
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
