Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. |
S06: Evaluating the potential to use non-sacrificial anodes in Copper electroplating process. Reduction in copper anodes could reduce the amount of Copper build up in the baths. Elevated Copper results in the need to decant the bath to lower copper concentration. The decanted solution then oes to waste generating F006 Sludge. Source Reduction - Engineering group working to evaluate the use of non-sacrificial anodes. Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Alteration of bath control could potentially have a negative effect on Products. |

S21: Utilize automated controls based on key parameters of process. Source Reduction - Engineer working to optimize process to avoid scrap events from process out of spec events Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Material usage is based on customer designs and demand. Amphenol Printed Circuits produces product specific to customer creating a wide variation in production demands. |

W13: Established dump/decant criteria to extend useful bath life, there by reducing waste generated from extra dumps and decants. W19: Based upon plating requirements some copper plating baths were taken off line due to the fact their plating characteristics no longer were needed in the products being manufactured. This resulted in a reduction in Copper as Copper compounds. Source Reduction - Decommisioned baths that no longer suited production needs. Source Reduction - Process engineers worked with vendors to ensure the baths were not going to produce scrap due to bath life extension. Source Reduction - Process engineers worked to create criteria to extend bath life. |

Source Reduction - Amphenol evaluated chemical preventative maintenance schedule and found the PM schedule did not change based on production levels. Engineers were tasked at determining updated scheduling based on production throughput. Any deviation from the new schedule required Management approval. Also 2009 production was 27 percent lower than previous year. |
The Waste Management Hierarchy |
The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes.
The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed
by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
