Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
S35: Set inventory levels for specific materials. Due to supply chain issues some materials expired due to ordering excess amounts to ensure having it on hand.

Source Reduction - Group compared lead times and usage to determine inventory levels.

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Increased usage for 2021 was driven by quality issues due to contaminant redepositing on product. Also experienced process upsets that required dumping and remaking a bath more frequently than desired.

2020 Source Reduction:: W22: Began to test outdated material - continue to use if still effective
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Source Reduction - Production group (Engineer and operators) are working to minimize material expiring before full use
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Use of Glycol ether bearing materials is determined by customer requirements for products manufactured in the reporting year. This results in a variation based on products manufactured.

2019 Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices[-0-4%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Barriers: B3-Barriers to P2 B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction.
W19: Changed criteria for bath changes to extent bath life, reducing dump and remakes

Source Reduction - Worked with production engineer to determine ablility to extend bath life
Source Reduction - Production engineer recommended criteria allowing for bath extension

Barriers to P2: B3 - Concern that product quality may decline as a result of source reduction. - Product criteria is the only consideration if a bath needs to be dumped earlier than current criteria dictates

2018 Source Reduction:: W21: Instituted procedures to ensure that materials do not stay in inventory beyond
Source Reduction:: W22: Began to test outdated material - continue to use if still effective

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W21: Inventory quantities have been evaluated and reduced to help off set potential for expiring shelf life.
W22: Pastes and inks are being evaluated to use beyond expiration date.

Source Reduction - Working with vendor to ensure availability of material due to reduced inventory
Source Reduction - Amphenol APC is conducting work to reduce waste and in turn reduce costs associated with replacement and disposal.
2017 Source Reduction:: W21: Instituted procedures to ensure that materials do not stay in inventory beyond
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Source Reduction - Working with vendor to get extensions beyond initial expiration date
2016 Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices[-0-4%]
Source Reduction:: W22: Began to test outdated material - continue to use if still effective[-0-4%]
Source Reduction:: W73: Substituted coating materials used[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W19: Removed some materials from processes when not in use to minimize loss
W22: Materials approaching expiration are tested , if they pass a new expiration date is given to extend use.
W73: Where possible and with customer approval we will utilize material with lower concentration or no Glycol ethers

Source Reduction - Our product managers will work with customers to see if substitution can be approved
Source Reduction - Material which is used intermittently would experience loss of effectiveness, we now containerize when not in use to reduce this loss
Source Reduction - Work with vendors should a material come close to expiration
2015 Source Reduction:: W22: Began to test outdated material - continue to use if still effective[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Source Reduction - Amphenol APCBT manufactures product on customer requirements, creating variability in process (some product requires a large amount of material while others do not. We continue to work at minimizing material use.
2014 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]
Source Reduction:: W21: Instituted procedures to ensure that materials do not stay in inventory beyond[-0-4%]

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
