2022
Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - Prior to 2021, the filter cake solid waste stream containing glycol ethers as well as other TRI and non-TRI chemicals was disposed of in a landfill. At the beginning of 2021, disposal of this waste stream was switched to a WTE facility which supplies the electric grid. The total amount landfilled was reduced from 191,000 lbs. in 2020 to 0 lbs. in 2021 and 2022, excluding a relatively small amount of residual ash.

2021
Other Environmental Practices: Energy Recovery - The solid waste stream containing 2,840 lbs. of glycol ethers as well as other TRI and non-TRI chemicals that was previously disposed of in a landfill has been switched so it is ultimately disposed of at a Covanta WTE facility. Although the disposal cost is approximately twice as much, this dramatically reduces the ultimate landfill amount (only small quantity of residual ash is landfilled), and the energy recovery is significant - the facility supplies the electric grid. Switching disposal of this combined waste stream from the landfill to the WTE facility has resulted in a reduction of approximately 200,000 lbs. landfilled in 2021.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
