Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Source Reduction:: S05: Modified content, grade, or purity of a chemical input[-5-14%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T02: External pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Previously switched from powdered chromic acid to liquid chromic acid to reduce possible air emissions, employee exposure and container wash outs. Although hexavalent chrome products are becoming a thing of the past, trivalent has taken their place and still has the potential exposure or contamination.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - There is no known substitute at this time for specific applications.

Source Reduction: Source Reduction - Switch from powdered to liquid chromic acid solution. this reduced container wash outs, less material reaching the scrubber.

2021 Source Reduction:: S05: Modified content, grade, or purity of a chemical input[-5-14%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T02: External pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas
Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.
S05: Switched from powdered chromium raw materials to a liquid blend reducing possible employee exposure and less air contamination.

Source Reduction - Through internal audits it was determined that we should look into switching from powdered chromium raw materials to a liquid blend reducing possible employee exposure and less air contamination. Started this switch in 2020.
Source Reduction - Less material potential reaching the air scrubber through reduced dusts. Started this in 2020 but saw results in 2021

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - We have eliminated most of our hexavalent chrome manufacturing and replaced it with trivalent chrome products. However, there is currently no substitutions for trivalent chrome chemistry within the metal finishing industry.

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - We have switched from powdered chrome material to a liquid material in our blends to prevent exposure and pollution.

2020 Source Reduction:: W42: Substituted raw materials[-15-24%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T02: External pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Source Reduction - Switched a raw material from Chromic Acid Flake to a Chromic Acid Solution to reduce potential employee exposure to air borne dusts.
Source Reduction - Switched a raw material from Chromic Acid Flake to a Chromic Acid Solution to reduce potential air emissions.

Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - After issues were resolved with the filter press we purchased we finally applied for our amended permit and received it early this year 2021. We are expecting this to help consolidate some of our waste in one stream.

2019 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.
Other Environmental Practices - We are looking to have a filter press in place and operational by the end of the year. This may help consolidate the waste in to one source.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Currently there are no known substitutes for trivalent chrome plating. Hex chrome is used to manufacture trivalent chrome solutions.

2018 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - There is currently no alternate technologies to replace chrome applications. Although most applications have converted from Chrome IV to Chrome III, chrome is chrome. We will be looking to install a filter press to treat all our rinse waters before discharge in 2020.

2017 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Although Hexavalent chrome compounds are being slowly made obsolete, trivalent chrome based products are increasing to meet the corrosion resistance demands of various industries. Whether Hex or Tri Chrome it is reported as chrome.

2016 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Chrome compounds (both Hex and Tri) are still used in various industries and plating applications. Although Hex chrome compounds are being eliminated and Tri chrome compounds are taking their place, chrome is still reported as chrome.

2014 Source Reduction:: W51: Instituted recirculation within a process
Source Reduction:: W67: Improved rinse equipment design
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
2013 Source Reduction:: W68: Improved rinse equipment operation
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Source Reduction - We determined that we could collect more of the rinse water from batch manufacturing and reuse it for make-up water for the next batch(s). We also had a reduction in the amount of customer bath samples that were tested relating to Chrome which significantly reduced the amount of material sent out for disposal.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
