Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Our discharges are directly proportional to our annual production and our owners do not want to change this.

2021 Source Reduction:: S21: Optimized process conditions to increase efficiency[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
S21: BY REDUCING SCRAP WE CAN MELT LESS METAL

2020 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Entirely based on production volume

2019 Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - All scrap (waste) is recycled either on-site or off-site

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - The amount of metal recycled depends directly on the production volume of castings.

2018 Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - This is based entirely on the amount of aluminum we cast each year, the only way to reduce is to cut production, which our shareholders aren't interested in

2017 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Copper is an element in aluminum alloys, the amount of copper handled is directly related to production level. We recycle every scrap.

2016 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The amount of copper emitted is linear with production volume.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Shiloh Industries Pierceton recycles all clean aluminum scrap on-site, machining chips and dross are recycled offsite.

2014 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The copper that Shiloh industries uses is an alloying element in the aluminum we cast. Everything gets recycled, the only way to reduce the amount waste is to reduce production.

2013 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - emissions based on published emission factor & amount of aluminum processed, only reduction possible is to reduce our core business. There isn't much management support for going out of business as a source reduction

2012 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Every last scrap of aluminum is already recycled, copper is part of the alloy

2006 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
*Classifications of Optional Pollution Prevention Information shown in brackets are provided by EPA.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
