Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2021 Source Reduction:: S44: Other improvements to operating practices and training
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
S44: Implemented monthly HSE training schedule with operations employees (rather than concentrating training at one time) to ensure HSE topics are regularly discussed.

Source Reduction - Recommendation came from Production group.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Maintained ISO14001 and ISO45001 certifications.

2020 Source Reduction:: W39: Other spill or leak prevention
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T10: Vendor assistance
W39: Updated the SPCC plan.

Source Reduction - Hired outside consultant to assist with update to SPCC plan.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - Maintained ISO14001 and achieved ISO45001 certification in 2020.

2019 Source Reduction:: W31: Improved storage or stacking procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W31: We updated our stacking procedures and no longer allow pyramid stacking in the plant. This allows more free floor space, sturdier stacks, and reduces spill risk.

Source Reduction - We have implemented a "Good Catch" program where employees can anonymously submit any HSE concerns or improvement ideas.
2018 Source Reduction:: W68: Improved rinse equipment operation

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W68: The Waste Minimization Team has continued efforts to optimize vat rinsing.

2017 Source Reduction:: W68: Improved rinse equipment operation

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W68: The waste minimization team at our facility has improved vat rinsing procedures such as updating department work instructions and using timed scrubber balls to rinse vats between batches.

Source Reduction - Employees are encouraged to suggest new best practices at team meetings or through the suggestion database.
Source Reduction - The waste minimization team meets to identify opportunities to reduce the quantity or hazard of wastes generated on site.

Other Environmental Practices: General Environmental Management - The facility achieved the ISO 14001:2015 updated certification in 2017.

2016 Source Reduction:: W68: Improved rinse equipment operation

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W68: Waste minimization team has implemented procedures to manufacture like products back to back to reduce amount of solvent needed for rinsing vessels between batches.

Source Reduction - Employees suggest new best practices at team meetings.
Source Reduction - Waste Minimization Team meets to identify opportunities to reduce the quantity or hazard of waste generated on site.
2013 Source Reduction:: W43: Substituted a feedstock or reagent chemical with a different chemical
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
W43: The solvent substitution resulted in reduced usage of this TRI chemical.

Source Reduction - This is part of our pollution minimization program.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
