2014 Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - We have seriously considered converting process to trivalent chromium instead of hexavalent numerous times in past but market is not ready for the appearance or the corrosion protection level. although trivalent chrome process has come long ways, still not match for existing process

Source Reduction: Ways P2 Was Incorporated in Original Process Design - Cascading rinsesPreventive checks of solution tanks, valves of the pumps carrying solution, hose integrity, if compromised , repaired instantly. Control of surface tension of solution to minimize drag out of the solution. Rack design engineered to minimize solution carrying out, Part orientation is based on preventing solution being carried out of the tank. Participation in many case at the initial design of the part to prevent solution being dragged out.

Source Reduction - Management has always made pollution prevention a major priority and always support any step needed to be taken .
Source Reduction - We have dedicated people who keep vigilant eyes on first sight of any tank with slightest compromised health. Those tanks with potential leak get repaired instantly.
Other Environmental Practices - We are constantly looking for sources to recycle the waste we generate. Prefer recycling over landfill the waste. It has always been a priority.

W19: Prior to any part being considered for plating, it goes through a critical team review of rack design , a very important factor, discussed is, the drainage of the solution while transferring parts from one tank to the next to avoid cross conta

Source Reduction - Each and all employees are encourage to participate.
Source Reduction - Solution maintenance and maintenance department have their routine checks in place.
Source Reduction - Technical team involvement is valued
Source Reduction - We plate over hollow Aluminum tubes. Which got plated on outside surface. The surface that is inside the hollow tube remains non plated, Aluminum. As that parts progress through the process, the inner exposed Aluminum would dissolved in the plating baths. Which turned out to be an impurity . This proved detrimental to chromium plating baths. It took a while to identify the problem, in past we decanted chromium plating baths when Aluminum concentration got high.Over period of time, we have learn to assign only one chromium plating bath to Aluminum substrate we also have had to figure out the maximum concentration bath would allow without producing scarp . Now we decant only one bath, instead of 6 baths. We also have learnt process much better to understand level of Aluminum at which it becomes detrimental to plating process. We also started sending spent chrome solution to place that reuses it instead of treat and land fill.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
