Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Source Reduction:: S35: Other improvements to inventory and material management[-0-4%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T02: External pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
S35: Monitor the stack gas for ammonia to ensure we are not using more ammonia than necessary.

Source Reduction - Monitor the stack gas for ammonia to ensure we are not using more ammonia than necessary.
Source Reduction - Took an opportunity to clean the SCR screens.
2021 Source Reduction:: S35: Other improvements to inventory and material management[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T02: External pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
S35: Regularly monitor the stack gas for ammonia to make sure we not using more ammonia than needed.

Source Reduction - Regularly monitor the stack gas for ammonia to make sure we not using more ammonia than needed.
Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Ammonia is used to minimize NOx stack emissions. We cannot eliminate its use, but we try to limit use to only what is needed.

2020 Source Reduction:: W19: Other changes in operating practices[-50-99%]

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T11: Other
W19: MOCs (management of changes) implementation along with operator training for good operating practices to optimize pollutants reactions by mean of SCR units. SCR and Ammonia injection grid system cleaning, thus increasing the catalysts performance and reducing ammonia usage

2009 Source Reduction - In 2009, the plant was shut down for 2 months. In addition, the ammonia is used for NOx emissions control. The DeNOx catalyst was changed out in the first half of 2009. After the catalyst was changed, daily ammonia stack measurements showed a significant decrease in the amount of ammonia being released through the stacks. The total ammonia released in 2009 reflects this.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
