Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - The use of Leaded Solder is driven by customer demand. Though a majority of the consumers have migrated to a Lead-Free final finish, there are still some applications that require Leaded Solder. We have offered alternative finishes such as ENIG, Immersion Ag and Lead-Free Solder. However, the use of Leaded-Solder is dictated by the application of the end product as designed by the customer.

2021 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - The customer base delegates what solder is to be used on their circuit boards. For those that select a Leaded Solder finish, it is based on the application that the board was designed for. For the most part, leaded solder is heavily used in military and government applications.

2020 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Leaded solder is the only source for Lead in our manufacturing process. The use of Leaded solder is dictated by the end user.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - The off-site transfers go to Metallic Resources and Reldan Metals. Both of these places recycle the metal.

2019 Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Though we are one of the largest lead free solder final finish providers in the circuit board industry, the use of leaded solder is dependent on customer requirements. The leaded solder is a final finish. It does not go through any subtractive processes after it is applied. It is just cleaned.

2018 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - The primary source for the Lead in our processes is the Leaded HASL finish. Though we offer alternative final finishes, the Leaded Solder finish is mandated by some customers (primarily government and military).

2017 Barriers: B7-Barriers to P2 B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies.

Barriers to P2: B7 - No known substitutes or alternative technologies. - Though Advanced Circuits offers and produces a large amount of Lead-Free solder final finishes, the market demand for Leaded solder is what drives the usage of the Lead based solder.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
