Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Barriers: B1-Barriers to P2 B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat

Barriers to P2: B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat - Ammonia works best for cooling because of the cost and ability to alert employees of a leak because of the scent.

2021 Barriers: B8-Barriers to P2 B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible

Barriers to P2: B8 - A reduction does not appear to be technically feasible - Ammonia is the best way to identify when you have a leak due to its smell. Switching chemicals would require a big capital expense and time to remove and use new chemical to cool.

2020
Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - Still adding Bio Spikes to reduce sludge in the waste stream.

2019
Other Environmental Practices: Waste Treatment - We are going to be adding some BIO Spikes as a test run to see if it helps reduce sludge. You drop the spikes in and it activates the bugs. The bugs eat away at the sludge.

2018 Barriers: B1-Barriers to P2 B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat

Barriers to P2: B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat - We've looked into adding treatment to our waste water stream, but the ROI does not justify the cost of adding the new equipment.

2017 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
2016 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W13: We have a full recycling team to support our recyclables.

Source Reduction - All our general waste (56 tons a month) goes to incineration and is converted into energy.

Other Environmental Practices: Energy Recovery - All our waste is sent to incineration and converted into energy.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We have a full time recycling crew on site.

2015 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Source Reduction - Currently all our general waste(56 tons a month) goes to incineration and is converted into energy. We also removed about 45 tons a month of SRM(Spinal Cord). It used to go to landfill and is now being used as fertilizer.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We have a full recycling team to sort out our recyclables.

2014 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
W13: Implementation of REPI (Reliability Excellence Process Improvement) - Program rollout that improved the process of scheduling and maintaining our systems.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - We have a crew dedicated to sorting out our trash. We are also on the final stages of getting the facility to Landfill free status.

Other Environmental Practices: Energy Recovery - We use solar energy to heat boiler water. Just installed 5 Tesla batteries to help offset peak hour usage. Biogas recovery.

2013 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
2012 Source Reduction:: W13: Improved maintenance scheduling, recordkeeping, or procedures
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T03: Materials balance audits
2008 Other Environmental Practices - THE FACILITY BECAME ISO 14001 CERTIFIED IN THE CALENDAR YEAR 2008. THIS WILL AID IN PREVENTING POLLUTION, AS WELL AS MAINTAINING COMPLIANCE AND CONTINUE STRIVING TO IMPROVE AT THE FACILITY.
*Classifications of Optional Pollution Prevention Information shown in brackets are provided by EPA.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
