Pollution Prevention Activities for Selected Chemical

Reporting Year Section 8.10: Newly Implemented Source Reduction Activity Section 8.10: Methods to Identify Activity Section 8.11: Optional Pollution Prevention Information*
2022 Source Reduction:: S41: Improved scheduling, record keeping, or procedures for operations, cleaning, and maintenance
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
S41: Inventory and scheduling tracking

2021 Source Reduction:: S35: Other improvements to inventory and material management[-5-14%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Barriers: B1-Barriers to P2 B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat
S35: Reduced order quantity and shared inventory across the division to limit scrapping materials due to expiring and exceeding retest specifications.

Barriers to P2: B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat - Pandemic impact is still affecting aerospace and limiting capital for new equipment.

2021 Source Reduction:: S25: Other process modifications made[-5-14%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
Barriers: B1-Barriers to P2 B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat
S25: Re-use third wash cleaning solvent in resin batch and minimize the amount of alcohol used in each cleaning cycle.

Source Reduction - Identified through waste matrix and management implemented a green belt project to reduce the amount of alcohol used in the cleaning process.

Barriers to P2: B1 - Insufficient capital to install new source reduction equipment or implement new source reduction activities/initiat - Pandemic reduced customer orders in the aerospace industry.

2020 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Pandemic caused major disruption with significant reduction in force.

2020 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Pandemic caused major disruption with significant reduction in force.

2019 Source Reduction:: W67: Improved rinse equipment design
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T06: Employee recommendation (under a formal company program)
Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas
W67: Solvent used to clean vat is heated and cascades down the side of the vat which removes more residue and decreases the amount of solvent required to clean by 35%.

Source Reduction - Lean six sigma project

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Starting September 2019 increased recycling of waste at off-site facility. Solvent used to clean vat has higher percentage solvent and is able to be recycled.

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Limited to specific chemical usage in drawings and specifications.

2018 Barriers: B6-Barriers to P2 B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas

Barriers to P2: B6 - Pollution prevention previously implemented - additional reduction does not appear technically or economically feas - Reduced waste in prior years. Restricted to using specific product and cleaning with solvents is the only method to remove the adhesive resin from the print screens.

2018 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Customers require specific products designated on drawings.

2017 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Unable to substitute for a less hazardous chemical because raw material is hard called out on drawings by the customer.

2017 Source Reduction:: W29: Other changes in inventory control[-0-4%]

Source Reduction:: W33: Installed overflow alarms or automatic shutoff valves[-0-4%]
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04: Participative team management
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T05: Employee recommendation (independent of a formal company program)
Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T01: Internal pollution prevention opportunity audit(s)
W29: Kanban system of the AB2200Y to ensure product is produced just-in-time and will not exceed shelf-life prior to use.
W33: Installed automatic shut-off valve to the solvent cleaning tank.

Source Reduction - Leadership team championed process change of kanban system for AB2200Y to ensure using first-in and not manufacturing adhesive earlier than needed.
Source Reduction - EHS audit of process.
2016 Other Barriers to Source Reduction - Customer required products per drawings.

TRI Pollution Prevention Glossary

The Waste Management Hierarchy

The waste management hierarchy established by the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) guides waste generators toward the best options for managing wastes. The preferred option is to prevent pollution at its source, but for waste that is generated, the preferred management methods are recycling, followed by burning for energy recovery, treatment and, as a last resort, disposing of the waste.
  • Source Reduction includes activities that eliminate or reduce the generation of chemical waste.
  • Recycling includes the recovery of a toxic chemical in waste for reuse.
  • Energy Recovery includes the combustion of toxic chemicals in waste to generate heat or electricity.
  • Treatment includes the destruction of a toxic chemical in waste.
  • Disposal or Other Releases includes toxic chemical quantities entering the environment.
The PPA requires facilities to provide the following details about each chemical they report to TRI:
Facilities may also provide optional Pollution Prevention Information describing their source reduction, recycling, or pollution control activities.
