PROD | Changes in Production Levels | Nitric acid is used as a raw material for a number of products that Blue Line produces. Diluted nitric acid is used for cleaning and qualifying equipment including tanks prior to batch production. The nitric acid solution is recirculated through the entire system including any pumps, filtering devices, or hoses that are to be used. Once the nitric solution has recirculated through the entire system multiple times samples are taken of the solution. The samples are analyzed by Blue Line's Chemistry department for any impurities that may cause the upcoming batch to fail. If the diluted nitric acid does not pass qualification it is then sent to water treatment tanks for neutralization and filtering prior to being sent out to the POTW. The qualification process varies based the purity requirements of the batch to be made. In 2015 Blue Line saw an increase in batch production of higher purity products which require a more stringent standard for qualification. Blue Line was having difficulty getting tanks to pass analyses prior to batch production of these higher purity products. The result of this was that much more nitric acid was being used for cleaning equipment, and subsequently being sent to water treatment for neutralization and out to the POTW. This caused an increase in nitrate discharges. Blue Line is testing out new methods for tank cleaning in an effort to cut down on nitric acid required for the process, and consequently the amount of nitrates being discharged. So far in 2016 Blue Line is still experiencing difficulty qualifying equipment for high purity products, and efforts to improve the process continue. |

RECY | Recycling | Recycling, for Blue Line, involves taking the metal solutions produced that are remaining in lines or during sampling and adding them back to other batches of similar primary metals. Tank rinses and PPE cleaning water are recycled as well through batch addition. |
W63 | W63 - Modified containment procedures for cleaning units | Initial tank washes were contained and stored for next batch production to improve yields and help prevent metals going into wastewater area. Personal protective equipment was also washed in container to trap and hold metals that could be used in batch production. |
