Under the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 (PPA), TRI collects information to track industry progress in reducing waste generation and moving towards safer waste management alternatives. Measures that facilities have taken to prevent pollution and reduce the amount of toxic chemicals entering the environment are shown in the table below. Although factors other than these reported practices contribute to year-to-year changes in releases, results are sorted by largest reduction in order to facilitate identification of pollution prevention successes. Nickel compounds 325180: Other Basic Inorganic Chemical Manufacturing 2018 57.00 5.00 -91.23 Source Reduction: W33: Installed overflow alarms or automatic shutoff valves - Overflow switch installed to shut off feed pump when level in rundown tank got too high. This would minimize solution leaving the system.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04 : PARTICIPATIVE TEAM MANAGEMENT - Maintenance and production management actively worked together to minimize solution leaving the system. This would improve environmental and economical aspects.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Any cleanings, equipment washing, or spills/leaks were collected and added back into the system. Purity was not quite affected in this process. Any solution leaving the system was washed down before collecting.

Nitrate compounds (water dissociable; reportable only when in aqueous solution) 325180: Other Basic Inorganic Chemical Manufacturing 2016 1,732.33 783.11 -54.79 Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Nitric acid has been re-used between tanks making similar products to reduce the nitrate compounds that go out into waste water. When tanks are being rinsed for cleaning, the rinse water that contains high nitrate compounds is used in another batch that contains the same compound for dilution. This is also an effort to save nitrate compounds that go to wastewater treatment and save on water usage. //enviro.epa.gov/enviro/P2_EF_Query.p2_report?FacilityId=78220BLLNC3443E&ChemicalId=N511&ReportingYear=2016&DocCtrlNum=1316215644232&Opt=0

A new system for tracking them all was implemented late 2017 so that they get used in the batches that match chemical identity and purity. Nitric acid 325180: Other Basic Inorganic Chemical Manufacturing 2020 19.00 13.00 -31.58 Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - Blue Line has steps to recycle nitric acid from one tank cleaning to the next. This cuts down the amount of fresh nitric acid having to be used and it still cleans well. By using classifications for batches, the nitric acid of the higher purity batch tank cleaning can go into a tank that will have a lower purity batch. Also, the nitric acid is tested for impurities so that it may go into another tank that needs cleaning if little to no impurities are present. //enviro.epa.gov/enviro/P2_EF_Query.p2_report?FacilityId=78220BLLNC3443E&ChemicalId=0007697372&ReportingYear=2020&DocCtrlNum=1320218721900&Opt=0

Nitric acid 325180: Other Basic Inorganic Chemical Manufacturing 2024 17.00 12.50 -26.47 Source Reduction: S41: Improved scheduling, record keeping, or procedures for operations, cleaning, and maintenance - Cleaning and recycling of cleaning solutions helped reduce the amount of nitric acid needed by a small amount since nitric acid is used to clean tanks of impurities based on batch specifications.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04 : PARTICIPATIVE TEAM MANAGEMENT - The Plant Manager and Production Manager work with Production Supervisors to strategically move cleaning nitric solution from tank to tank to reduce the amount of fresh nitric acid needed for cleaning. They also have Chemistry test impurities to verify that the nitric acid used to clean the tanks can also be used in batch production.

Source Reduction: Cleaning and recycling of cleaning solutions helped reduce the amount of nitric acid needed by a small amount since nitric acid is used to clean tanks of impurities based on batch specifications.
Other Environmental Practices: All nitric acid is neutralized and pH is verified before any discharges to POTW.

Other Environmental Practices: Nitric acid is recycled from one tank cleaning to the next when washing tanks of impurities. By doing so, the amount of nitric acid used is reduced while still cleaning tanks to acceptable impurity levels. Higher purity batches require more nitric acid washing to remove any and all material that may stick to internals of the system. These higher purity batches have the nitric acid tested multiple times before using the tanks.

Copper compounds 325180: Other Basic Inorganic Chemical Manufacturing 2018 0 1.00 Source Reduction: W33: Installed overflow alarms or automatic shutoff valves - For the copper compounds process, an overflow switch was placed in to shut off the main feed pump if the flow got too high. The secondary pump could sometimes get clogged or not be able to keep up. In order to prevent spills, this source reduction activity was implemented.

Methods to Identify SR Opportunities: T04 : PARTICIPATIVE TEAM MANAGEMENT - Maintenance and production team were actively involved in containing as much of the copper compounds that resulted from the process as possible.

Other Environmental Practices: Recycling - All equipment, containment, and all possible leak washes were collected and placed back into processing. The specifications allowed lower purity or slightly contaminated material to go back into the process without consequence.
